next steps help

hiya, just finished my a levels and am awaiting results. have applied to uni and got all my offers back fo environmental science. i really want to do this, however hated my a levels immensely and didn’t sit most of year 13 so this makes me unsure of whether i should go to uni. i also do want to travel, but then i want some form of qualification or start to the industry. was wondering if anyone had any advice or any ideas of what job i could go into that is geography/environment/conservation/hazard management etc etc related or just advice in general about what i should do?

thanks

What A levels did you do and why did you hate them? Are you worried that you will also hate studying Environmental Science at uni? Even though you say you "really want to do this"?

Perhaps you should ask your firm / insurance choice to defer your offer until next year, and take a year out to go traveling?

And the fact that you "just hated the sixth form environment" makes you "unsure of whether i should go to uni"? Have I understood that correctly?

How does the fact that you "do want to travel" and "want some form of qualification or start to the industry" fit into the decision about whether to go to uni or not? Do you mean a qualification other than a degree? Or a post-graduate qualification, perhaps? And the travel - is that related to your career plans at all (given that they involve geography/environment/conservation/etc.), or do you just like the idea of seeing a bit of the world?

OK. Here goes:
1. The fact that you "just hated the sixth form environment" is no reason not to go to uni - sixth form and university are very different. Also, you say that you "really want to do this", so it sounds like it's just concerns about how much your disliked your sixth form which are holding you back.
2. I suggested above deferring your offers for a year and spending that time travelling. You didn't respond to that. It might help separate sixth form from university mentally, and you get to see the world too. This option only works if you can fund the travel you'd want to do. If this isn't an option right now, then maybe you'll be lucky enough to end up in a job when travel is part of it. If not, save some money whilst working and then go travelling.
3. In terms of "some form of qualification or start to the industry", that you be the Environmental Science degree for which you have offers right now.

Hi Everyone

Hopefully I can help a litlle bit here too but I'll try anyway.

Back in 2010 at age 37 I was unsure about university studies and whether I would even be eligible to study but I plodded on for the remainder of the year and the more I thought about it, the more I thought yep I want to give this a try.

My mum and dad found a leaflet for the Open University in 2011 and suggested I give them a call, which I duly did. I can sincerely say now that I am glad I did, the environment is very different from school or college and we all work to not only help ourselves but each other aswell, trust me, you will enjoy it no matter which university you want to go to although with the ou the study is mostly online.

Since 2018 I have taken 4 modules which I passed and I am now at age 51 I am currently awaiting a 5th result whilst waiting to start my 6th module and I am thoroughly enjoying it.

If you have a clear path set out of what you want to study and get a degree in, go for it.

Hope this helps.

Hi @gin_n_tonic
I'm just coming to the end of my degree studying physical geography, so might be able to help. Firstly, congrats for the offers you have received from the universities.
I've found university and sixth form are completely different work environments. University is a lot less structured and requires a lot of independent study which is different to sixth form, some people like this style but it des require quite good time management.
In terms of travelling, there's a few options. Firstly universities have quite long summer breaks of about 3 months so you could go traveling in this time, or after your degree is finished. Alternatively, you could speak to the universities you want to go to about deferring your place for a year to go travelling.
Finally, if you want some form of qualification to start in the industry with, there could be other options to university like degree apprenterships, if your unsure if you'd enjoy university style study.
Hope this helps, and if you have any questions feel free to ask

is it not a bit late to look for degree apprenticeships though ?

Hi @gin_n_tonic
Most degree apprenticeships would have been advertised earlier on in the year, however there may be some available. Or alternatively if you were interested in this option you could apply for them next year and use the time in between to travel. Might be worth speaking to your sixth form's careers advisor if your interested in these as they should know a bit more about degree apprenticeships.
Hope this helps
