Where to study Economics?

So I'm worried about staying away from home and the excess student debt. I want to go a uni around Essex maybe 2/3 hours away?
I'm currently predicted a A in photography, D* in business and a B in maths. I'm worried if I got UEA or Essex people won't hire me afterwards. I was hoping to be able to a masters and work in London later on but I won't be able to afford to go to London unis to get those top qualifications. I get contextual offers which can open some doors for me and I was wondering if anyone has a uni recommendations?

Both Unis are fine - and employers are not as fussed about 'which Uni' as school-leavers assume.
If you get a 2i or a First, and you have some relevant work experience or placement experience from within your degree, you'll be perfectly okay for your first graduate job.

The place where you do the placement year is up to the students to choose.
We will help you with your application as well as how to look for placements but the institution itself is for you to choose.
We can recommend places where Essex graduates have done their placements but is really up to you.

I am currently a student in Economics at UEA and I can give you some advice. 🙂

Firstly, UEA is in the top 20 for Economics in the UK according to the Guardian University Guide 2024. This is extremely good and competitive and especially something employers will look for. I will send you a link to the Bachelors Guide: https://www.uea.ac.uk/course/undergraduate/bsc-economics

This will give you an overview of all of the modules that get taught over the three years, with very employable skills such as maths, stats courses, econometrics, macroeconomics (up to advanced level) and microeconomics (up to advanced level). With these skills you can pretty much work in any company. Examples of graduate jobs include economists, researchers, policy analysts, working in the Government, consulting, banking, data scientists, working in insurance, etc. If you would like more info on the range of jobs please do let me know as there are many and endless opportunities.

During my time at UEA I have been able to do a year abroad as part of my degree, which may be of interest to you as well. Many of my friends did a year in industry, which means they actually get that practical work experience as part of their degree and then in the end many get offers to return to the place they worked. This may be interest of you as you earn during this year as well and then you could potentially be able to do the masters in London if this is what you wanted to do, it also is a great USP to have work experience. During your degree you could also do internships in the summer which would also boost your employability.

Also, on the link I sent you, you can see that UEA Economics was ranked 1st for job prospects by the student crowd in 2022. This is where people review this course.

Alot of people from my course have gone on to do masters in for example UCL, LSE and Cambridge so the quality and respect that this Eco degree has from UEA is high. Additionally, you can do a dissertation in your final year where you can pick from working with a company or writing up your own research paper. It is really interesting and would highly recommend as you do get that 1:1 support which is very valuable. 🙂
