University applicant for paramedic science

I recently applied to my university choices to study paramedic science however I was rejected by most universities as it’s so competitive although I had outstanding experience with NWAS I was offered alternative course such as adult nursing and health and social care and was reserved for paramedic science at only one university i don’t know what to do if I don’t get through with the reserve as I don’t have a passion in either of the alternative courses and unsure if i should use it to get in university and improve my experience and apply again next year for a different course.I need as much advice as I can get and would like to hear if anyone is in the same position or successful using an alternative and made it on to being a student paramedic.

Did you get through from application stage to interview? If you were rejected after interview did you ask for feedback? Most universities will provide it if you ask for it, and it can be useful to help you decide what to do next (I.e what else were they looking for etc).

If you do not have an interest/passion in the other courses offered, my advice would be do not go ahead with them. Healthcare in general is a hard sector and you will be spending 3+ years studying the subject, so you want to make sure it is in something you actually enjoy and want to do post-qualification. It also isn’t always possible to start on one course and transfer across to another in healthcare.

You do have the option of applying through Clearing to other universities that have spaces on Paramedic Science and I would recommend having a look as Clearing is now open 🙂

I would also recommend looking at clearing, I wouldn't do a course you aren't passionate about though as it is a waste of your time and money. Hope it all works out for you 🙂

As above, don't do a course you are not interested in. Hang on for clearing and then if you don't get a place this year, apply again next year. Try to get additional experience such as working in a care home or volunteering for St John's Ambulance if you do take a gap year. And keep up your interview prep - healthcare courses still interview for clearing spaces.

I too applied for 5 universities and only managed to get into one of them. I never realised the interview process was so gruelling.
When the last interview was approaching I used chatgpt to give me answers to several different paramedic science interview questions. I got better at answering them in great depth. Only to realise when I got there they never asked me any of it. But I was prepared.
They asked me what has been in the news that you have found most interesting about paramedics. I thought this question was about the large RTC that happened on the motorway or the hanging that happened near me, they wanted to know about budget cuts, and having large waiting times at a and e, how paramedics are overworked and underfunded, how there's a lack of beds in hospitals etc.
They also asked me to describe myself in 3 words, I could only mention 2 and describe that. Choose your words wisely and go into great depth as to why people would say that your hardworking or strong.
One paramedic was happy with one of my answers in the group activity, I made them laugh but my reasoning behind this was incredible.
You have literally got to go into these interviews expecting that you know all of your stuff.
I recommend next year when you apply you look into the constitutions of the NHS, the 6 C's, importance of team work, paramedic based education, who the college of paramedics are, which ambulance service you want to go into, and most of all, why do you want to become a paramedic. You have to be confident in your answers.
I wish you all the best of luck and I hope I haven't gone off on one too much.

Also, I haven't experience with first aid or paramedics or healthcare at all, I clean for a living. So I doesn't matter if you have experience that's a load of toffee.
