Year 10 mock exam results…

Hi. I don’t really know if anyone really WILL reply to this but I’ll give it a shot.
Im in year 10, and I’ve just finished and got some of my results from my mock exams.
To put into simple words, they aren’t really what I was hoping for. I got a 5 in maths and English, and all 4s for chemistry, physics, and biology ( also a 3 in history, I know - not that great.) I haven’t got any of my other results yet apart from these.
They are not what I was hoping for or aiming for. I am usually a smart, bright child and to say the least I was very unhappy with these results. You could say I was the gifted child growing up and now facing my burnout.
For more context, I moved schools near the end of January this year (2024) and it took a great toll on my mental health. I was and still am not in a good place right now. I feel like part of the reason I did so bad was because I missed out on a lot of the learning that I was supposed to do. (My old school was very uh behind I guess.)
What I’m trying to get to here is, how do I tell my parents? They expect so much from me and they take grades VERY seriously. I’m supposed to be this great role model for my two younger sisters. I feel sick to my stomach when thinking about my grades. Reports are going out I think around next week and I’m so nervous and scared I don’t know what to do.
I tried SO hard for these mocks and I’m very unhappy with these results. Someone please give me some advice. Thank you

First and foremost: you are not a failure. Nor are these your actual GCSE results, and even if they were, it wouldn't be the end of the world. There are multiple different paths you could take. Don't worry

I'd recommend being honest with your parents. If they're making you overly-stressed with their expectations, then tell them that, and seek their support. I know moving schools and stuff can be difficult - you can talk to your teachers, form tutor etc. at school if you're worried that your parents won't take your grades well or you think you need mental health support. You can also use childline.

Now, be honest with yourself. (Apart from moving schools), are you not getting the grades you want because you aren't working hard enough at school? Start putting in the effort into lessons now. Are you not revising effectively or enough outside of school? Make yourself a reasonable revision timetable using active recall (i.e. flashcards, brain dumps & essays/exam questions [eventually doing past papers under timed conditions], NOT mindlessly copying out notes) and potentially revise with friends. Are you not motivated enough? Set yourself some short & long term goals to remind yourself of. Are you not understanding the content you're meant to know? Talk to/email your teachers and watch videos on youtube. Are you revising too much to the point you are completely burned out and struggle to begin? Timetable in some more relaxation time and do your hobbies/hang out with friends.

Message me if you want some subject-specific revision advice.

But please don't get too stressed over these results; they don't define you. They can be improved through effort. GCSEs are meant to be difficult (that's why they're a qualification!) so please talk to someone about your mental health if you're struggling - it's not a sign of weakness <3

Hi Super Sprinkles,
Wow. Thank you SO MUCH for the amazing advice! 😁 I honestly wasn’t expecting to even get a reply heh. These past couple of weeks I’ve been so anxious and I felt like I couldn’t talk to anyone about this so it felt nice to explain it all on to here and get some great advice. Your advice definitely made me realise some stuff and things I need to work on 🙃

I’ll definitely try and explain to my parents how I’m feeling or talk more about my mental health. I will also message you if I need any specific revision advice. Thank youuu! 💕 :3

heyy, i know how you're feeling as well, i got my mocks back and i was not happy to say the least in a lot of my subjects (moved down 3 whole grades in some of them). honestly i was gutted at first but now im kinda happy. it allowed me to see where i need to focus and how to gain more exam skills. for example, i got a 6 in rs when i was predicted a 9 and it was simply cause i didn't write enough for the 12 markers. a lot of the marks you dropped may be because these could be the first formal exams you've ever sat, and the stress mightve got to you! whatever happened, do not worry as this is now a confirmation that you will definitely not achieve those grades again

Get your papers back and work out where you went wrong. Identify any learning gaps as no two schools will teach GCSE topics in the same order. What papers were these? Were they past papers?

Your parents must understand that changing schools during GCSE is not a good idea and you have time to sort this.

Check the exact specifications you are studying and download these so you are clear what you need to know. Talk to teachers about help to catch up.

Hi I am sorry to hear about that but trust me you have plenty of time to improve and I have some tips for you to improve for each subject
For bio, chem and physics I recommend using the specification on the exam board website and watching free science lessons at the same time. To test yourself you should use flashcards. I made mine on Quizlet for each topic.
For English I recommend watching Mr Sales videos and making notes on them and memorising the analysis. He has a guide to getting 100 percent in English Language which really improved my grade a lot ! I also bought his other guides for my books and made flashcards.
For maths I did lots of Corbett maths questions for each subtopic and watched the higher gcse maths playlist.
For geography my textbook was quite good so I made flashcards and tested myself over and over. I did the same basically for history too. For history I did aqa so I noted down what type of question we got for each paper and a brief structure as well. Please don't worry you have lots of time to improve and implement these tips. Honestly repeated practice over and over again will make so much difference along with doing as many past papers once you are sure with the content. When i was doing yr 11 mocks i was rlly stressed about english lit and lang but mr salles honestly carried me.
