Psychology, Architecture or law?

hello, i am a year 12 currently studying psychology, english literature and sociology.

i need to start my application in a couple of months and i really need some help deciding on what to do as a degree.

i was initially interested in law, hence why i took literature but i realised i really like doing psychology and would like to do it in uni but i have heard that it is really difficult to find a career after the degree.

i also always wanted to be an architect, i took art for gcse and got quite a good grade and i feel like i could really enjoy doing architecture.

anyways, i was thinking of doing psychology for uni and then either doing a law conversion if i do not like it or just get a masters degree in psychology and take any necessary steps to make sure i get a good career in it. but i also really wanna do architecture so im just really struggling to find the one i want to do out of the three.

if there are any architecture, law or psychology students/ graduates who see this, please let me know how you are getting on with the degree and the career and please let me know if you enjoy it and how you handled it, as i have taken an interest in all three subjects.

psychology seems to me as the best option out of the three as i can easily do a conversion degree into law if i find that it's not the career path for me.

but anyways, thank you for reading and please let me know!

Maybe do a bit of a pros and cons on each, compare them and see if it gives you food for thouht.

What makes you want to do each of the options?

My personal thoughts? Do architecture as that sounds like it's something that would make you tick and has been your ambition.

I wanted to be an engineer when I was younger but self doubt and bad experienes in school with maths went off to do Sports Science and then healthcare work as it was a good option with prospects. Years later I finally career changed and 9 years on from that I'm loving life in engineering and I wish I'd been able to do it from the start.

Do what makes you tick as that will make you happier and bring better success.
Have you been to any uni open days and listened to the subject talks for law, psych or architecture?

Have a look at some of the threads on the architecture forum:

Hiya!

As a psychology student with a bit of an artistic streak (I took Fine Art for A-Level), I completely understand the struggle! I was a bit unsure as well, what degree course I should apply for.

I would say that it's really important to research and understand what each degree entails. You've already made a start at this by making a thread on TSR, but sometimes looking over course websites, looking at modules offered can be helpful. After all, you're dedicating 3 or so years into studying this subject - its important to enjoy what you're studying!

Psychology is quite a broad course, I would say. Whilst you do look at stuff like social psychology which is a bit more social science-y, there are elements that are quite scientific, as you go into the neuroscience and biopsychology of the brain. As someone who didn't take a single science A-Level, I found this challenging, but quite interesting to study and do-able! You do quite a bit of statistics, but at my university, we got quite a lot of support for that, so I didn't find it too challenging. Be mindful that there is essay writing involved typically, and you usually involve yourself in group-based practicals, where you write reports.

But overall, I find it really interesting! I'm finding myself doing quite well.

Its a bit early on, but it can be helpful to consider the careers associated with the degree, and seeing if the tasks within these careers are something you see yourself doing. This helped me make my decision as well, when I was struggling to choose between course subjects. I recommend looking at websites such as Prospects, which has a comprehensive description of what a career entails and the steps to get there. I found this super useful personally in helping me inform my decision.

Think about what job you want to do as all of the psychologist jobs and law paths require the undergrad or conversion course, and you need an architecture degree to become an architect as well

I dont know if this will help, but im going on to do A-Level psychology and have looked at going into mental health nursing because its quite good experience to go on to be a clinical psychologist which is what i want to do. Like you said as well you can do a conversion course if you want, and psychology is very good for going into law. Or have you thought about criminology or forensic psychology? Forensic psychologists get quite involved in law i think. Another bit of advice actually is ask chat gpt what the average day of a _____ is like, that helps me a lot. I hope any of that helps lol.
