Chinese Studies BA / AMES (chinese) 2024/25

Anyone studying a Chinese Studies BA degree? Or thinking of? I'd be grateful for your opinion on the best uni to apply to? I'm interested in the history of China as well as contemporary China.

If you are currently studying Chinese how are you getting on? What's your course like?

Many thanks!

Hi Nlo2024,

I just finished the four year BA Chinese course at SOAS, UoL. Most uni websites will have module lists, on which you'll be able to see if there are courses on the history of China & contemporary China that interest you. A few related to these topics that I have studied are, Contemporary Chinese Society, East Asian Civilisations, Literature, Politics and National Identity in Modern China, Classical & Literary Chinese (covered the history of the Chinese language starting with ancient texts, bone scripts), etc.

As for my Chinese level, I passed HSK 5 in my final year. The Chinese course at SOAS is great, but I think it's important to note that with any language based degree, you're not going to be good at the language unless you put a lot of time into it (Mandarin takes three times as long as a European language to learn, studying Mandarin for three hours is the equivalent to studying Spanish for one hour, for example).

I think SOAS is arguably one of the best places to study Chinese in the country, owing to its specialism on Asia. However, if you're after a Russel Group course - Cambridge, Sheffield, Edinburgh, etc., are all great choices 😀

But overall I'm glad I chose BA Chinese, it was great! Especially the year abroad 🤩

All the best in your decision making process & I'm happy to help with any more questions if you have them.
