Student wanting to study in London or Manchester

So, short story here.

I have recently moved into a house share in outer Manchester (Irlam) and I enjoy the area, it's quiet and still within a good distance to the city. I have a girlfriend that also lives in Irlam who I have been with for two years and I care for her very much, and see her regularly.

This has provided me with a conundrum as I had always planned on moving down to London and study because I visited London during COVID and really loved the place around the centre, and I would love to experience living there.

However my girlfriend who has lived there as a student herself said that she didn't personally see much of central London and due to prices of rent, she had to live in outer towns in 'not the nicest' flats, and that the 'London Life' will not be what I expect if I am living on a student loan and part time job income.

So I'm unsure what to do. I have been accepted also to study in Manchester. I have been to the centre a few times and do enjoy it as it's lively and the city is growing fast, so there is a feeling of excitement.

I do not personally want to live 3 hours away from my girlfriend and barely see her, if I can stay here and also live a good student life in Manchester

So my question really is some advise on the situation, and if the London student life is really worth it, and how it compares to Manchester

Thanks

Hi @PandaBooper.

I think your girlfriend was right. Living in London is very expensive. Try and check the rents online. You might hardly pay less than 700 pounds for a tiny room per month in a house share. If you also want to save money for travelling, rather use buses or live in walking distance near your university.

You might be lucky to find a cheap room, but it requires to search and do at least the virtual viewings to make sure the room is real.

In my opinion, London is worth living there, especially if you feel drawn to do so. But you need to make sure that you are secured financially and you have to calculate all the costs.

Good luck.
