clearing timeline

Hi people, just wanted to ask how long typically does the clearing process take?? If I apply on results day, how long does it take to get a confirmed place and go thro the whole process?

If you contact a Uni on Results Day morning, and they agree to offer you a place, you then apply through UCAS to that Uni in the afternoon. Usually you would get confirmation of a definite place through UCAS during the late afternoon or evening the following day.
Clearing isn't a case of just applying through UCAS, and how long it takes really depends on how much luck you have in finding and securing the place.

To get a place in clearing you will first need to see if the uni has the course in clearing, then call the university's clearing number, and get a verbal offer for the course. Once you have a verbal offer, you need to put in the option in UCAS and the uni will confirm it.

Getting the verbal offer can take time - you need to have time to find the course you want at the unis you want to do it at, time to call them (including quite possibly sitting on hold), getting the verbal offer (which you'll need to give the relevant information to them so they can check if they can make a verbal offer - if you don't have this to hand, this takes longer as you try and find your results and UCAS number thing and so on).

Bear in mind also, this whole process moves quickly - especially for competitive courses at popular universities, places can go very quickly and you need to be up and calling unis from the minute the clearing lines open first thing in the morning! So you may spend a fair bit of time finding courses, calling their clearing lines, waiting on hold, getting through, and then asking if the course is available and finding out there are no spots left. Or perhaps you might get informed they can't make you a verbal offer based on your qualifications (this would usually be the case if you call up somewhere you don't meet the requirements for in the hope they will still make you an offer - probably not worth the time).

Once you have the verbal offer, putting it in UCAS and them confirming it tends to be pretty quick in my experience. Unless they ask you to send an alternate PS or something which may take a little longer for them to confirm.

As above though this typically all happens in the mad rush on A-level results day so tends to be same day (or maybe the day after to get the final confirmation in UCAS). If applying later in the clearing period for less competitive courses it might be a bit more streamlined calling up and getting the verbal offer, although still likely to be a same day affair I would expect?

Everyone's experience of the clearing process can be different, and universities would want to support you throughout. The process can often be quick. It's highly possible you'd receive your offer the same day. On occasion, more information may be required. This means it can take a little longer, but you should be kept informed throughout ☺️
