Biomedical science work experience

I’m a year 12 student interested in biomedical science looking for work experience. I have contacted my local hospital and they don’t have anything available so I don’t know who else to contact. The next nearest hospital is nearly an hour away via public transport.

Hey so I've seen a similar thread in student room regarding this a while back and the discussions there suggested that you don't need a specific "biomed" work experience.. I think any work experience would work.. some even cited working at tesco for a bit works apparently 🙂
You could however try remote internships (things that you can do from home) or try to get in touch with a nearby lab whether that's a part of a company in your local area or even in a nearby uni 🙂

Let me know if it works! All the best 🙂

Good evening @ilanmacpherson,

It's great to hear you are looking for work experience.

Self-founded internships can be the most rewarding; however, they tend to be unpaid and are timely to find. The best way to find internships by yourself is to email a list of companies that interest you or network with people from your selected industry. Emailing companies can be easier. However, you will receive a lot of rejection, as many companies do not like to have students in their workplace. But all you need is one successful answer, and you have your internship.

Your CV is important when applying for internships. Ensure you have written it before emailing the employers, as you will want to include it within your email.

My key questions to ask yourself when applying for and finding your Internships:

Have an idea of what you would like to gain from your experience. e.g. teamwork, computer analysis, lavatory work, forensic analysis, publishing skills, etc...

This allows you to tailor your experience and helps fill the gaps missing on your CV.

Know how you will get to the internship. e.g. do you require a remote internship, or can you drive.

Ensure you do not commit to an internship, which you cannot get to, as this will not be ideal and will make the situation stressful.

Do you require being paid, or can you volunteer your time.

Volunteering your time can open up many more opportunities. However, students often require income, hence the Readings internships.

Which industry would you like to explore?

Do you have any access requirements?

e.g. Do you need a disability-confident employer or step-free access?

I hope these tips help!

Furthermore, the University of Reading offers a great biomedical course; you can find information about it here.
