QMUL resit??

Hi I am a year 1 student studying Electrical and Electronic Engineering. I have failed two modules which I lose 30 credits. But I still have 90 credits in my pocket which should be enough for progression to year 2. I am not understand why the official result said that I am not able to progress at this moment and resit is required in spite of that. As the academic regulation said that if fail not more than 30 credit, the student can still be progressed to year 2. Anyone knows why? Thanks a lot!

This is a question you need to ask the university itself. I agree that you should be able to progress, based upon the information you have provided and this rule in their Academic Regulations 2023-24:

"Standard bachelors programmes
4.26 To progress from one developmental year to the next on a standard BA, BEng, LLB, BSc, BSc (Econ), or BSc (Eng), a student must both:
i take and pass modules as follows:
a developmental year one to two: take 120 credits including a minimum 90 at level 4 in year one. Pass a minimum 90 credits in year one. Achieve a minimum weighted average year mark of 40.0 or higher.
b developmental year two to the final developmental year: take 120 credits including a minimum 90 at level 5 or higher in year two. Pass a minimum 195 credits across years one and two. Achieve a minimum weighted average mark of 40.0 or higher using the two weighted average year marks in a 1:3 weighting (year one counting for 25 per cent and year two for 75 per cent of the mark).
ii fail (after resit) no more than 30 credits in any one developmental year."

You didn't join year 1 via a foundation year, did you, and have to carry some failed modules into year 1?

Hi,

Yes, you should be okay to move onto second year, however, the reason why your results stated "Resists require" is because you still need to pass the 2 modules, and an opportunities to pass those modules occur first before going into second year.

Therefore, resists (usually occurring in July) will be your second opportunity to pass rather than going into second year with the additional 60 credits (2 modules) to pass as well.

Hope this is clear, good luck with your resist exams!

Hi,
thank you for your reply.
I got the email from the program team and they saidthat the failed modules cannot be lower than 30%and I got 22% and 35% for those two modules whichI failed but they told me highly recommended toretake those failed modules if I failed that module’sresit😱. I am so nervous now as I don’t think I willpass that module, can I still be progressed to year 2in this case? Anyone knows? Thanks a lot🙏🏻

Hi,
thank you for your reply.
I joined year 1 from foundation year but I didn’t fail in foundation year.

Hi,
thank you for your reply.
I joined year 1 from foundation year but I didn’t fail in foundation year.

Understood. Having looked through their regulations for some reference to achieving a minimum of 30%, I think I may have found the issue. Do you know if your Electrical and Electronic Engineering course is accredited by the Engineering Council? A search on the Engineering Council's web site (results here) suggests that it is. If that's the case, then paragraph 6.40 of the university's academic regulations (link above) applies:

"BSc and BEng programmes accredited by the Engineering Council

6.40 To progress from one developmental year to the next on an EngC accredited BEng or BSc programme, a student must take and pass modules as follows:
i developmental year one to two: take 120 credits including a minimum 90 at level 4 in year one. Pass a minimum 90 credits in year one, where the mark in any failed modules is at least 30%. Achieve a minimum mean average year mark of 40.0 or higher.
..."

So that means that even in the 30 credits you're allowed to fail, you must attain at least 30% in order to progress.

Understood. So I have to resit then.
But may I ask what will happen if I failed again as the program board recommend me to retake if I failed the resit exam! And I am confused with the meaning of retake. May i ask do you know what is retake in a university means and will it affect my progression to year 2? As the program board didn’t answer about that so I am frustrated now. Thanks🙏🏻

According to the same regulations I keep quoting from, a retake "involves attendance at classes and completion of all elements of assessment, whether previously failed or not."

Hopefully, your resit gets the 22% module up to 30%! :crossedf:

Oh I see, I will try to pass the resit exams and not to retake😅😂 Because I definitely want to progress to year 2 in this September! Thank you for sharing the information to me🙏🏻

But I got the email from the program board that we are permitted to fail two modules in your whole degree with marks below 30. So is it still eligible for me to progress to year 2 ?

‘We highly recommend that you retake these modules to give you the best chance of achieving your degree by final year. You are only permitted to fail two modules in your whole degree with marks below 30 and in ECS429U you scored 2X, this will not give you much leeway in future as the course increases in difficulty.’

In your first post (from last Thursday) you said, "I am not able to progress at this moment and resit is required in spite of that". So it appears that they've changed their mind, as they're now merely recommending that you resit the two failed modules.

Given that they say, "You are only permitted to fail two modules in your whole degree with marks below 30" then their advice seems sound, at least as it pertains to ECS429U (Programming Fundamentals for Engineers).

Have they confirmed that you are able to progress to the next year regardless, and retake these modules alongside the normal Year 2 modules? Or are they suggesting that you focus only on these two modules next year, and progress to Year 2 in the following year (i.e. adding a year to the duration of your degree? If they haven't made that clear, then I suggest you ask as that would play a key role in your decision-making, I suspect.

I am also confused with that. Actually I have asked them about that but they were not answering my question😰

Hi I just got the reply from the program team and they said that:
To progress to your next year of study, you must meet the following criteria as outlined in the Academic Regulations.
Developmental year one to two:
Take 120 credits including a minimum 90 at level 4 in year one.
Pass a minimum 90 credits in year one.
Achieve a minimum weighted average year mark of 40.0 or higher.
Fail (after resit) no more than 30 credits in any one developmental year.
Please also note, that to be eligible to be awarded with the accredited degree, you
must not fail any modules with less than 30%. Should you fail any modules with less than 30% after completing resits, you will only be eligible for the non-accredited award title upon completion of your studies.

So may I ask is it means that I can still progress to year 2 but if marks are lower than 30%, I will lose my accreditation to my degree? Thanks!

OK. So if you resit and are still under 30% you have a choice to make:
1. Retake the module you got 22% in (and potentially the module you got 35% in, if that's still under 40%). As I said above, a retake "involves attendance at classes and completion of all elements of assessment, whether previously failed or not."
2. Progress to Year 2, but knowing that the final degree you obtain won't be accredited.

When will these resits happen? QMUL's Late Summer Resit Period starts tomorrow, so I guess it could be any day now.

Yes. That's what the last bullet point of you previous reply says: "Should you fail any modules with less than 30% after completing resits, you will only be eligible for the non-accredited award title upon completion of your studies."
