Working during first year of social work degree ! Possible ?

Hi I’m an extra mature student starting an access course this September and I’m currently looking at both nursing and social work degrees.
I have noticed that in year 1 of the social work degree though that there is no bursary.

What is the first year like in terms of timetable and work ? Would working still be feasible during yr one ?

Any help much appreciated 🙂

Hey, :wavey:

You are correct that there is no bursary for 1st years studying social work please check out this link: https://www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/social-work-students

It depends on the university on what your timetable will look like. However, having a part time job is feasible if you are organised.

Do bare in mind that you will also have placement blocks during your first year.

Many universities (including Canterbury Christ Church University) have jobs for students including the student ambassador role. This is where students can work at open events delivering campus tours, chatting to visitors about their course and assisting their academics etc. This work is flexible and can be picked up around your studies which works well for many students especially healthcare students. These roles normally pay well. This is something you can always keep in mind and can contact the university where you will be studying to see if they offer paid work.

I hope this helps!

Good luck starting your social work degree.
I'm starting social work in Sept and will be working evenings and every other weekend around it, hoping it works out 😬🤞🏻

Thanks all for the replies, that’s really helpful.

I currently work as an admin in the nhs and I’m in the bank so could pick up shifts when needed.
