UCL Mechanical Engineering Clearing/Adjustment

I'm in a bit of a predicament, so I got rejected from Oxford post interview (Can let that slide) but somehow got rejected from UCL and Bath too, I really wanted to go UCL, and before you say gap year, I'm not allowed a gap year, I will literally get disowned, so I have to get into either Bath or UCL for engineering for 2024 entry, any advice? I can do adjustment, I may exceed A*A*A*A but i'm not sure.

Adjustment doesnt exist anymore - its just 'Clearing', and although you can contact any Uni you like on Results Day to ask about a place, the chances of UCL having any spaces for Mech are essentially zero.

Btw, Bath is one of the top Unis for Mech - do your research.

Let them disown you.

Apply for yini placements and get paid for a gap year https://www.etrust.org.uk/product-page/075sc-year-in-industry-placement-engineer

Nobody can say if the unis will be in adjustment. It will depend on several factors.

It sounds like you feel a pressure to appease others. This is not a good way to choose when & where to go to university. if you did personally want a year out, volunteering, internships etc. are incredible ways of broadening your skills, wisdom & make a huge difference for the cv. Please try and figure out what is best for you & if the people care & love you they may be accepting of a well reasoned plan.

I’m not taking a gap year, I like my mum and i can say for certain she won’t speak to me for a while if i take a gap year.

If you were in paid employment in the engineering sector for a year she wouldn’t talk to you?
That seems incredibly irrational.

might be irrational but i’ve always had this conversation with her as I doubt i’ll get any good clearing places too, but the answers always the same, i’ve tried to bring up a gap year to my family they’re 100% against it and are holding out for clearing, tbf everyone offline tells me most unis do clearing.

What offers did you get?

Most universities DO do clearing - but not all and not for all subjects. The universities and course you’re looking at are highly unlikely to have vacancies. But there’s plenty of excellent mecheng courses outside those universities

kings and bristol, not very keen on either, and I know I sound arrogant but i don’t think i should need to take a gap year, I already worked hard for good predicted grades and good GCSE’s

Yes you do sound arrogant.

The reality is that every year top universities dont enter clearing and Mech Eng is a particularly competitive subject. You need to get away from your arrogance and face facts. You are not going to get better than Kings or Bristol so your choice is either accept them or take a gap year. Time to face the real world. Your arrogance isnt helping you. Universities dont have to be nice to you whatever you think.

but some will do some clearing, like maybe maths or any random STEM course, i’ll just get onto that then switch, somebody is bound to drop out in first year

That’s not how it works, especially for well ranked courses with a placement year. They’ll already be oversubscribed and it’s not one in, one out.

I would not place your eggs in that basket. Yes, you might be able to swap, but it’s basically roulette.

over many years UCL have not entered clearing. either have Imperial and others. Those are for any subjects. Bath might have the odd subject but that is the hard to fill ones and that is true for most leading universities. Outside the top dozen or so universities there is a strong chance of a course being available but the ones you are looking at wont have availability and you need to face that. Your choices are basically going to be to accept Bristol or Kings, go to a lower graded university or take a gap year.

Universities dont have to accept you whatever your arrogant mind thinks. Time to learn to live in the real world rather than your view of things

One of only two Russell Groups universities in Scotland, Glasgow has 20 courses up for grabs in Clearing 2023. However, apart from environmental sciences and sustainability and nursing, all of them are PGDEs and therefore only open to graduates. More information can be found here.

King’s College London
One of the top London players, King’s has five courses available through clearing this year but all five are different variations of a nursing degree. Click here if you’re interested.

i think i said somewhere if i take a gap year im getting disowned, this isn’t just me, if this thing only involved me i wouldn’t care, but its unironically technically a whole school thing, literal school wide drama was caused by my bath rejection and i wish i was joking.

if you’re lucky, warwick might be on clearing for this subject, and they’re a very good russel group university.

the chances for kings is very very slim (you might want to double check their engineering course, it’s not accredited and they only do general engineering and electronic engineering, not mech eng) and the same with bristol. i believe their STEM courses in clearing are usually things like chemistry and geography but don’t quote me on that 💀

UCL haven’t been in clearing for YEARS, and recently Bath has become such a popular “oversubscribed” amongst STEM students specifically so they probably won’t be in clearing for engineering.

You might find other russell group universities like manchester, leeds, loughborough and southampton (just to name a few).

at this point, it’s either compromising the university you attend, or trying your luck applying again next January with a fantastic personal statement and some engineering work experience under your belt so that your chances are a lot higher.

i was in your position; my family basically forbid gap years, or anything “unconventional” like foundation years and study abroad…my situation with family may be more extreme but i am not in contact with them anymore and decided to take a gap year and am doing so much better. taking a gap year is completely fine, it doesn’t really have any correlation on your intelligence so it’s odd that you’re suggesting that.

you can attempt to call them on results day but the chances may be very slim. if anything, oxford is more likely to do adjustment than UCL and Bath.

what other unis did you apply to via ucas? and realistically, on results day, if you come out with those As and A*s, what do you think would happen - how would your mum react if you’ve gotten these amazing grades but are unable to get into Bath or UCL which is just virtually impossible to get into via clearing?

realistically, in regards to this, your peers would be going off to university and living their own lives. i don’t know their reaction but i promise you, in the grand scheme of things, their opinion of you is so irrelevant, even if it’s currently “the big thing” of the year. if i was in your shoes i’d focus on trying to work for an engineering company for a year. if this isn’t possible, you can commute to your closest university and see if you can intern (unpaid unfortunately) at one of the engineering departments. i did this, just write an email to a professor who you like their research and then they’d be willing for you to tag along in their lab. bonus points if the uni is UCL or Bath because this will give you brownie points when applying again.
