Is oyster card worth it?

I'm moving to London for uni and ik they use oyster card for transport is it really worth it? Does it come out cheaper or something? Because as a student I will need to travel multiple times a day for work and uni.
Help me out 🙏🏻

It works out pretty much the same if you just tap your card or use Apple Pay  if you buy tickets instead of tap you could also link a student railcard and get a discount. Places like Santander can get you a free railcard if you choose to open a student bank account w them or you can pay £30 a year for one , hope that helps!

Hi there @Milana Bacul, I would definitely recommend getting an oyster card especially the 18+ Student Oyster card as you will be eligible for further discounts! However this also depends on where you are living in London as some parts of London are only accessible by train. If this is the case for you, I would recommend getting a rail card and linking it to your Oyster card to be eligible for 30% discounts during off-peak hours on tubes and trains! Hope this helps 🙂

I've got a railcard but I thought it only works for trains between cities not in London underground? Could I use that for busses too? And if I open an account with santander is it railcard for free for a year?

It only works when you buy a ticket e.g day ticket or a ticket between main stations that have overground e.g Barking to London Bridge. The ticket that you buy will be able to be used with buses etc ,but the railcard (to my knowledge) can’t be linked with tap and go however you can use your bought train ticket on the underground. If you open a student account with Santander they you get a free railcard that will get you discounts on train tickets. But not on the contactless tap and go . I hope that wasn’t too confusing let me know

Oh gosh so much information haha I'm gonna end up walking 40 minutes to uni instead 😅 so I read above someone said I can li k my railcard with oyster card as an option, and you're suggesting opening a santander student account which give me a free railcard, so if I buy let's say with my railcard ( idk if that even is possible) a weekly or monthly train pass does that still work? I feel like that way I'll spend less on transport

Tickets examples are tickets from zone 1-6, you could buy a ticket for zones 1 only, zones 1-2, zones 1-3, 1-4 etc depending on which zones you are going to be travelling in and what times you’ll be travelling which are off peak (non rush hour) and peak (rush hour are in the mornings 7-10 and evenings 4-7)

Yea I'll be located in zone 2 for uni ans accommodation but sometimes go to zone 1 so I'm better of just buying for them then, I'll need to have a look properly once I move in, don't wanna be overspending on travel 🥲 but thank you so much for the information I'll definitely look back at this

Hii sorry I know a lot of info 🤣😭😭 You can’t use a discounted railcard on monthly train passes as it already gives you a discount

For a pay as you go ,contactless, it’s 8.50 a day any time and however many journeys you take , it stops charging you at 8.50 if you stay in zones 1-2. If you buy a zone 1-2 travel card which is the same amount of freedom, any transport all day it is also 8.50 but you can also add a student discount from a railcard that you can get for free from Santander student bank . So if you want to save money you could buy a train ticket but if you’re in a rush you can do contactless it’ll be a few pennies a day more

If you have a student photo Oyster card, you can take it to the control station of a tube station (as far as I know this is the only way to link the cards), to link it with the railcard to enjoy 1/3 off PAYG (during off-peak only). This has to be renewed every year.
