A level combinations

I want to take A level English Literature for certain, but would pyschology and Philosophy be a good combination with that? I'd like to do a Literature degree at a university in London, maybe do writing or something down the line like that.

For an English Lit degree you only need A level English Lit - the other A level subjects are not important, so pick 2 other subjects that you will enjoy studying, and where you feel confident of a good grade.

Don't worry about what 'looks good' - Unis will state clearly what subjects they want or prefer on their website - there are no secrets and no information that only some people know.

examples :
Liverpool - Undergraduate - Department of English - University of Liverpool
UEA - Course Search | University of East Anglia (uea.ac.uk)

hi I do combined English and philosophy and I would say that they are a good combo as with my course there has been some links between subjects and the skills you learn from English or philosophy from essay writing are helpful

I also want to study English Literature and as someone already said above, most unis will only require you to have either English Language or English Literature A level. You could take both, especially if you are intrested in writing, but make sure to check if they are compatible in the unis you're planning to apply to. History, sociology, classic studies or a foreign language would also be good choices, but the most important thing is to pick subjects you enjoy.

I study psychology and philosophy (and briefly English in the beginning of the year) and I would definitely recommend them together. Personally I didn’t enjoy English as I didn’t find it challenging enough or very interesting, but that probably had a lot to do with the fact that I was doing English language and literature instead of plain literature. If you are doing AQA philosophy then it will go nicely with English. The content is quite light but the exam technique is all about precision. You do have to be careful not to waffle, which can be tempting if you do English literature, but honestly, the essay skills learned in both subjects are transferable to a wide range of degrees. With psychology, there is a lot of content and if you do OCR English literature with AQA psychology, you will have to make the time to revise both well. With psychology, the vast majority of it is knowledge with a few 16 mark essays that involve evaluation and application. I will say that psychology will help you think about texts in English in a unique way, so in that aspect it may be useful. As long as you can manage your workload well, psychology, philosophy and English literature seems like a good combination for a literature degree.

Hi there,

A-level English Literature is a fantastic choice, especially if you’re aiming for a Literature degree. Pairing it with Psychology and Philosophy sounds like a great combination. Both subjects will help develop your critical thinking and analytical skills, which are invaluable for any literature or writing career.

While you’re considering universities in London, you might also want to explore options outside of London, like the University of East Anglia (UEA). UEA has a strong reputation for its Literature and Creative Writing programs, and it offers a super supportive environment with excellent faculty. Plus, the campus is in Norwich, which is a beautiful, vibrant city that’s a bit more affordable than London. This could provide a great balance of quality education and a lovely place to live and study.

Just a thought as you weigh your options! Good luck with your A-levels and your university applications. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

Best,
Daniel
