Is Budapest, Hungary safe for a solo traveller in his late 20s to visit?

Some of my relatives who had been to Budapest, Hungary said there were pickpockets and motorcycle gangs snatching phones from tourist-like folks. Is it true?

I want to visit there but am still hesitating because of what they said. Am I thinking too much?

I went there solo the other year over Xmas during the World Cup, similar age.
It’s the same as any English city. Just extra safeguard yourself to remove the opportunity for people to target you. Stick to main roads, don’t flash any valuables or place them somewhere easy to get to. If you need to look at valuables, find a cafe to stop or use a bathroom.

I used to wear a very thin pocketed belt/waist wrap under my clothes to keep anything I don’t want stolen safe. Some people I know who travel a lot take cheap forfeit “valuables” like an old Nokia, and wear ”kids” watches.

I got the train up to Visegrad and hiked the Spartacus loop in the national park. Felt just as safe there too. Usually people are targeted where there’s shortcuts, quiet through roads between sights, or extremely busy tourist and public transport areas that distract people.

I’ve been to a lot of cities, it felt safer than places like Marseille, New York, Milan, Malaga, and Athens.

Personally I’d recommend Valletta in Malta or Vienna in Austria. They’re lovely compact cities with a ton of stuff to see. City breaks are also way better at Xmas when there’s the added Christmas markets to see.

It's natural to feel concerned about safety when traveling to a new destination. While it is true that Budapest, like many other major cities, has areas where petty crime such as pickpocketing and snatching can occur, it's important to remember that these incidents are not rampant and can often be avoided with some basic precautions.

I simply hope that my parents, who are in charge of my source of finance, would feel comfortable with my idea of travelling there solo...
