Very confused about Student Finance

Hi there, I have no idea how to move forward with this so I'll explain my situation. I'm, as of very recently, living alone and no longer a dependent of someone regarding my student finance application. I also will be classed as a mature student. I have no idea how I would go about applying for the highest amount of maintenance loan (which I'll need because I'm on my own). What would I need in order to apply for this or get my current income assessed for that loan? I'm leaving my job to do a PGCE 1 year course so wouldn't even have any income for the duration. What do I do? Any advice is greatly appreciated and thanks in advance!

Hi there,

Can you please confirm your age? Have you already made an application with us for your new course?

Thanks, Graeme

Hi Graeme!

I'm 30 years old and yes already submitted an application.

Hi there,

When you submitted the application did you say you had a partner at that time and were they asked to support your application? Is it for the 2024/25 academic year?

Thanks, Drew

Hi Drew,

Yes they submitted evidence but I have since checked the status of my application and that part is no longer showing under the list of "things to do" if that makes sense, so I assumed they had reached out and retracted the evidence. Which is great if that's the case because I've had zero time to resolve that part myself and wouldn't really know how to. Also yes it is for the 2024/2025 academic year.

Hi there,

You would need to submit evidence of your separation so we can assess you as single. You would need to contact Student Finance England so they can send you a Marital Status Declaration form. I understand you may not have been married but that is just the name of the form. Do you receive a 25% single person occupancy discount on your council tax bill?

You can call us Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm and Saturday & Sunday 9am to 4pm. You can also contact us through live chat Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm to get the form emailed to you.

Thanks, Drew

Hi Drew,
I rang Student Finance and they've emailed me the Marital Status form, however I'm confused by it. Do I check the "separated" box? Something I forgot to ask over the phone and it took me ages to get through to someone! The person I spoke to was super helpful btw!
Thanks!

Hi there. Yes that is correct, you would need to indicate "separated" on the Marital form. Thanks. David
