Navigating Job Commitments When Moving for University: help!!

I've been applying for summer jobs and facing a lot of rejections because I can't stay permanently—I'm moving away for university. Recently, I applied at Costa and, out of desperation, mentioned that I'm planning to attend the local university if everything goes well on results day. I really need this job to fund my university expenses!

Now, I've got the job, but I'm unsure how to handle my departure in late September. Should I wait until results day and then say I didn't get the grades and have to move to my insurance choice? Or could I simply request a transfer to another Costa location near my university? - (Surely they would understand as this would have been out of my hands??!!)

I feel guilty about not being upfront, but I kept getting rejected when I mentioned attending university in another city, despite having four years of work experience in hospitality and retail, and I won't be able to attend uni without saving up over the summer. Any advice on how to navigate this situation?

Hey there!

I completely understand why you said what you did to increase your chances of getting a job. It isn't easy trying to find temporary roles.

I would just be honest with them and say you're moving away for university. It's common for retail/hospitality workers going to university to keep their roles when they return home for holidays (if you plan on doing that). Or, as you said, request a transfer. This is a likely option if you're a good employee who is always on time and does a good job. Again, this potentially opens the opportunity for you to work at your current Costa during the holidays.

I think it is best to be honest. Staff turnover rates for retail/hospitality are always pretty high. Managers are used to this, and they will recruit someone else.

Have a great summer, and I wish you all the best for September

Hi there,

I agree with what Ana said, it is not easy to find temporary jobs so it is understandable why you said you were attending a local university.

I would also suggest to be honest with them, explain that you are moving away for university in September and discuss with them if there are any options for you in terms or keeping your job while you are at Uni. You could request a transfer and sometimes big chains like costa or supermarkets will be able to do this if there is demand for staff in the city that you are moving too. You may as well as if this is a possibility as this will save you looking for a new job when you get to uni and means you will still have money coming in while you are at uni. It also means you could potentially transfer back in holidays etc but you would have to discuss with them whether this would be an option.

Or, you could ask about leaving but coming back to work at Costa in the holidays. They may allow you to come back and work in that store in the Christmas and Easter holidays which might be a good option for you so you can still have a job during the holidays.

They will understand about you moving away to University- people change their minds about where they want to go and it must happen quite a lot so I am sure they will be used to people leaving/transferring. They will find other people and if nothing else at least you will have had a job over the summer to save up for Uni.

I hope some of this helps,
