I lied to my job about university.. help!

I've been applying for summer jobs and facing a lot of rejections because I can't stay permanently—I'm moving away for university. Recently, I applied at Costa and, out of desperation, mentioned that I'm planning to attend the local university if everything goes well on results day. I really need this job to fund my university expenses!

Now, I've got the job, but I'm unsure how to handle my departure in late September. Should I wait until results day and then say I didn't get the grades and have to move to my insurance choice? Or could I simply request a transfer to another Costa location near my university? - (Surely they would understand as this would have been out of my hands??!!)

I feel guilty about not being upfront, but I kept getting rejected when I mentioned attending university in another city, despite having four years of work experience in hospitality and retail, and I won't be able to attend uni without saving up over the summer. Any advice on how to navigate this situation?

Look at your contract for your notice period

Retail and hospitality employers will almost always be willing to drop their employees like a stone for any reason they like - you don’t owe them your loyalty. Unless you signed a contract promising that you would never leave then you can leave whenever you like for whatever reason as long as you work your notice period.

You don’t have to make up excuses - just tell them after results (or when your notice period is close) that your plans changed and you’re moving city now.

Hi there,

At this point in your life, everything that you say is a prediction and no one expects you to know everything. It isn't great the you weren't honest but the best thing that you can do now is work as hard as you can to get a good rep and see what happens if you can transfer!

I hope that helps!

All the best,

You don’t really have to explain yourself. Just state that you’re handing in your notice with effect from whatever date.
