Edge Hill Student Life

I’m wondering if any past/current students can tell me what it’s like living in Ormskirk. I do really like the uni and the course but was slightly put off by living in such a small town.

I’m a mature student and so my main concerns are primarily finding accommodation easily after my first year, finding part time work and good public transport for getting around. I haven’t seen too much accommodation options as I’d ideally like to live in a studio or something. I’m not overly bothered about nightlife as I’m 26 so kind of past the whole going out all the time part but I do like city life and being close to a good range of amenities and I feel like I may struggle in a small town. I thought about living in Manchester but I feel it’s just too far away to commute everyday.

Also if anybody is on a nursing course how easy is it to get to placements? Are they generally close to campus and what is transport like for getting to them?
Would really appreciate any input on this as I don’t have long to decide.

Hi! Im not sure if this will help, but I'm going to EH in September as a mature student too, slightly more 'mature' at 36 but still 🤣.. I live in South Liverpool, and drove to the open day last weekend and it was really easy to get to, straight down the motorway and pretty much straight through once you come off. Ormskirk station is apparently only a few mins walk away if you don't drive, so if you're wanting more of a city living, maybe you could have a little look along the train lines? theres loads of stations along the route that might be a bit more 'central' for you?
At the open day they mentioned having specific accomodation options for 2nd & 3rd years, again not too sure if that helps!

Im going to be doing midwifery, and am hoping to get placed at the womens or whiston, which both arent too far from me, they also showed us that they also place at warrington, wigan, wirral and possibly chester if i remember rightly..

Hope some of that helps!

Hello @justagxrl

I have recently graduated from EHU this year so I feel I am in a good position to tell you about the student life here : ) EHU is really inclusive and has a lot of different types of students including lots of mature students. When I first came to uni I was set on living in a big city like Liverpool or Manchester however when I visited EHU I loved the campus, the university and Ormskirk. I find it a really good location as you have everything you need on campus as well as having Ormskrik town only a short walk or bus ride away. In the centre of Ormskirk there is a train station where you can really easily get to Liverpool and Preston meaning the city life is easily accessible at any time. So of course I really recommend to consider what type of town you would like but EHU has been the perfect place for me. I would recommend coming along to an Open Day to see if EHU is for you : )

Studios are quite common in Ormskirk and can be found through companies such as McComb students. The universities Students Union are able to provide support with finding off-campus accommodation and there are always plenty that come up. There are also off campus housing Facebook pages you can join that will help you with your search! There are also plenty of options for part-time work in and around Ormskirk area depending on what sort of thing you are wanting and the careers team are fab at supporting you through fining a part-time job. Public transport to and from Ormskirk couldn't be easier as there is a free bus that runs every 20 mins. The train station in Ormskirk centre also means its accessible by train especially from Liverpool, so if you did decide that Ormskirk is too much of a small town but still love the course and the uni maybe living in Liverpool could be an option for you?

One of my flatmates did placements as a nurse and I believe you don't get to chose your placements and are instead placed. The uni will always ensure that you have means of transport and will be placed according to your needs, for example if you don't have a car you may be placed somewhere accessible by train.

I hope this helps reassure you somewhat! EHU is truly a lovely place to live and study but it's important to consider what is right for you also. If you have any other questions feel free to ask us by chatting to student directly on the Ambassador Platform : )

Hey @justagxrl,

I am also a recent university graduate at Edge Hill and thought I could maybe also give some insight as well.

I found living in Ormskirk across my three years a wonderful experience and really was a home away from home for me. Ormskirk is a sweet little town full of lots of pubs and bars, some mainstream shops, charity shops, independent stores and more. There are markets every Thursday and Saturday and there is then an Artisan Market every first Sunday of the month which have even more stall selections.

In terms of accommodation there are quite a few different agencies that you could likely go with. I believe it would be easier for you if you are just going for a studio as it would be a much quicker process as your not waiting on other friends to decide where they want to live and what everyone's budgets are. I would personally recommend the Tiny Pig student lettings I lived with them in my final year in a flat with four others and they were great the maintenance work was always nice and quick usually within a day or two. Obviously I can't speak on what the studios are like there but my flat was amazing.

Part time work I think should be easy to find as there are quite a few options such as working in the pubs and bars in Ormskirk or even working on campus in the Students Union Bar or the other outlets found on campus. There could also be an option to work in Preston or Liverpool as these are easy to get to. Due to their being direct trains to both of these places at the Ormskirk train station which is around a 5 min walk from the centre of Ormskirk or around a 15 min walk from the uni.

I am not a nursing student so I won't be able to give any feedback on that.

But I hope this helps, let me know if you have any further questions.
