Because they give out more offers than places. Therefore, if anyone misses their grades or turns down their offers then UCL are more than covered.

It's not that they're anti-clearing, it's just as above - they don't need to use it. The point of clearing is for unis to fill unfilled spaces on their programmes. UCL tends to not have issues filling their courses so...they haven't needed to use the main clearing process. I believe they may have had a few courses they offer some places for through Clearing Plus, a separate process where unis directly make offers to students eligible.

Unis that can't fill their courses put the spaces into Clearing.
Unis that can, and do, fill their courses from the offers they made, don't need to,

Hi, I also saw on whatdotheyknow that they offered places through clearing in 2023 for so many courses. However, I don’t think they officially advertised clearing? So I’m wondering, was this clearing plus or did people just call up the courses and ask for a space anyway? Thanks for your response

That wasn't clearing, it was clearing plus. It's a separate process where the university "fishes" out applicants who have opted in and are eligible and fit their specific requirements which they have communicated to UCAS. Applicants have no control over whether they will be considered beyond just opting in and not holding any offers.

If you're relying on clearing plus you should be reasonably planning to apply in a gap year as you have no way of knowing if you'll even be considered as above.

I think if you aren't holding any offers there is some option to do so - you'd need to check the UCAS website to see.
