What is an actual workload in Imperial College London??

Hi!
I’ll be applying in 2026 (deferred entry) for undergrad biotechnology in Imperial College London. But my biggest worry is that the amount of work will be unbearable and that I’ll burn out🥲. Is there is anyone from this uni or know anyone who attends (attended) it? What is an actual workload, do you guys have social life outside of uni? And how much of your free time you sacrifice for studying instead of enjoying your life (like really honestly)??

they'll probably be a moment where it all feels like too much, but you'll ride it out and be fine. Socially it's really good, I've made a bunch of really amazing friends. I spend a lot of time in london exploring and cycling and clubbing etc. So don't worry you'll be fine. the bio courses are all very sociable aswell so don't stress

Awful students support - go elsewhere if you have another offer you are happy with.

Awful student support in what way? I’m 3rd year Imperial and enjoying it. Would love to hear your thoughts.

Not m thoughts actual student experiences. No-one willing to help - tutors are poor and some teaching is less than good. If you are seem to be struggling you'll be on your way out.

Weeds out unmotivated students, tough uni, good rewards. But from my experience my personal tutor is great and helpful. Personal tutorial attendance is mandatory and there's sanctions for not attending. They make sure everyone is keeping up with the work. And also help with references, internship and other applications. I don't think there'll ever be a uni where everyone is satisfied with teaching.

We are talking here about many people - I'm a teacher and we talk to other teachers in other schools. It's a common experience sadly and has put people off applying.

It can definitely be intense (especially around exam season) but you can certainly cope with it and still have a good time as long as you manage your time well

That’s not the reality.
Some degrees are a bit easier and lighter in terms of workload, some are really hard and can be overwhelming, especially during the first two years. Quite a number of people struggle at some point or another, but a lot of support is available to those who are willing to look for it and many arrangements can be made in order to help a struggling student to pull through.
However, one needs to be proactive and look for this help. The staff can not be aware of your difficulties if you don’t voice them out.

It is not a perfect university ( show me the perfect one) and some things can be improved but it is not at all this awful place that you repeatedly describe in your numerous posts.
Many people actually enjoy it and find it rewarding.

However, you do need to do your research - Oxbridge has far better support than Imperial.

What would that "research" involve exactly? The person literally goes there and experiences it, we have also shown you multiple different sources of data that happen to support what we've experienced ourselves. Naturally you have refused to believe all such sources of data. So given what I've just said, what "research" should we do?

Your research is focused on your experienced and is therefore biased. I'm stopping now because there's none so blind as those that don't want to see - go to Oxbridge for Maths Not Imperial!

LOL WHAT? You do realise those students that have come upto you complaining about Imperial have ALSO EXPERIENCED it right???? Student surveys carried out and any research done asks those who have EXPERIENCED imperial themselves, only those with experience of imperial can tell you how it is and how they found it lmao. What kind of reasoning is this lol.

If what you're saying is true, that these issues are so widespread at the university to the point where everyone should avoid it, most student's experiences should line up to your claims.

"I'm stopping now" - Yeah right, I look forward to seeing you in the next random Imperial thread I open lol.

To any prospective uni student reading this, go wherever your heart desires.

Which I agree with

A current students experience is far more credible and less biased than someone who has absolutely no experience with the uni.

Hi, sorry this may be a bit off topic to your original question, but seeing that you posted 4 months ago, I was wondering how your process of applying for deferred entry went.
I am also thinking of applying for deferred entry at Imperial, but for medical biosciences, and on their website it says that 'Under exceptional circumstances, you may apply to defer your admission to the next academic year.' and 'Deferral requests are based on a change of circumstance that is outside your control and could not have been foreseen, and that will prevent you from taking up your place at the original course start date.
So I'm not too sure if I can in fact just submit it without some other addtioonal steps. I wonder if you had to give any explanation by email or state a specific reason on personal statement. Thanks! And wishing you the best
