Funding for post-grad medical training in the UK

Hello, i'm currently an international student studying medicine in the UK. I have heard mixed discussions about how FY, CT and ST funding works-- some say that you don't have to pay to train at any of these levels while some say postgraduate medical training does indeed cost!

I'd like to gain more clarity on this, would appreciate if anyone who is well versed with system could let me know which of the above is true! Thanks in advance!

You will have to pay for GMC registration, membership exams (and any courses / books study resources you need to use). For specialty training, you generally also need to pay the respective royal college for some sort of ‘junior’ membership that includes access to its portfolio system, which is required. Other things would include medical indemnity insurance. You will have a study leave budget for certain courses for your training, but you are likely to also end up paying for some things yourself. So yes, training does cost - in the sense that there are expenses to consider. But you don’t have to directly pay to train if that makes sense?

I think the key thing you seem to be missing here which isn't exactly clear from above is - during FY, CT and ST levels, you are a paid employee of the NHS. Exactly how much depends on whether you're in England or the other nations I believe, the BMA has guidance on this here: https://www.bma.org.uk/pay-and-contracts/pay (same info available from the NHS but just less neatly laid out).

But as above there are costs involved with training, but you are getting paid in the process (with which to pay those costs).
