Degree Apprenticeship Query

Hi there,

I have just finished my A-levels and have decided to take a gap year; in the meantime I’ve been weighing up my options. I am predicted an A*, A and A in Maths, Further Maths and German respectively. So, although uni is a possibility, I think a degree apprenticeship in something maths/finance related would be a much better fit for me.

From what I’ve looked at so far, there’s minimal resources about degree apprenticeships and I’m yet to have found any material outlining the best way to create an attractive application.

So, I have a few questions in regard to the application process:
- Is relevant work experience essential, if so where is best to look for placements and how much work experience should I aim to get before submitting an application?
- Is there anything else I ought to be doing before the applications open to better my chances for being considered?
- Should I include the odd jobs I’ve done in my CV i.e. positions like retail assistant and bar associate?

If there is any other information that’s worth knowing I’d highly appreciate it letting me know.

Thanks,
Jake.

Hi Jake,

I've helped a bunch of people get degree apprenticeship offers in the finance sector so I can definitely help out with your questions.

Work experience isn't essential but I would highly recommend it. It was the number one reason for me getting the 8 degree apprenticeship offers I did. I would recommend getting at least one in-person work experience and a couple of virtual work experiences. If you want, I can send you some resources to help with getting work experience opportunities if you're not sure.

Finance applications usually open around September/October so I would definitely recommend doing some things to add to your application over the next few months. This can include work experience, online courses, volunteering and delivering a presentation.

Yes, definitely include the odd jobs in your CV. Although they might not match the industry you're applying for, they'll show that you have a bunch of transferrable skills like communication, teamwork, attention to detail, time management, leadership, analytical skills etc

If you want, I can send over some resources which will help you create the best possible application, include a sample CV and how to get work experience. Let me know if you're interested and I'll send over
