Do you need to go to Grammar School to get into Oxford or Cambridge Uni?

Is it true that most students that get into Oxford or Cambridge have been to grammar school, private school, convent school or public school?
Do any students who went to normal main stream schools ever get into Oxford or Cambridge?

60% of students are from state schools, so yes, they do get in. However it is true that private and grammar school kids usually have higher chances of entry as they have higher standards and more support. oxbridge are trying to reduce this by using contextual information, but it still isn't fully fair.

Do convent schools have a particular rep for getting students into Oxford and Cambridge? Never heard that before :ninja:

approx 68% of Oxfords undergraduate intake comes from state schools. About 15% are from independent/private schools. That's still higher than the national proportion of pupils attending an independent school, about 6%.
The remainder of undergraduates are from overseas. Therefore over two thirds of undergraduates are from 'normal' state schools and academies.

I've only ever been to non-selective state schools and I go to Cambridge. It's certainly not uncommon and especially nowadays there is a lot more support.

There's actually a higher percentage who didn't go to state school at St Andrews, Durham, Royal Agricultural College, Edinburgh, Exeter, Imperial, and UCL.
