Is Cambridge med possible

I’m in year 12 and am predicted A* A* A* A* and A* in my EPQ
My UCAT score has consistently been in 99th percentile and above in my mocks
I have 4 weeks of work experience and lots of supercurriculars.
My personal statement is coming together very well.
The only problem is my GCSEs, coming from a top 100 grammar school I underperformed in my GCSEs, I got 999988888776 and 4 were gcse resits. I know Cambridge don’t care about GCSEs too much but medicine is very competitive, I’ve always wanted to go to Cambridge but just kind of gave up in my GCSEs.
Is it worth applying?

Yet, your profile is fine.

yes, with a caveat that if you are at ‘a top grammar school’ still for A level, they will have an algorithm comparing your scores to others at your school to see how you performed in relation to your cohort

moreover, they will factor in home post codes amongst other contextual considerations

it is not unusual at medical school to have the A level predictions as high as you have, so concentrate on converting your UCAT practice scores into an actual score in a real life test situation

once you have that result, apply to your strengths - see the which medical school should I apply to

remember you have only 4 medicine choices, not 5, and it is important to apply using your strengths to ensure getting offer(s)

Congratulations on those fantastic predicted grades. And 99th percentile is good going for UCAT too. Don’t forget SJT in all of this. Sometimes it’s easy to focus on the UCAT numbers. I appreciate Cambs don’t consider it but others do.

MedMama mentioned the importance of applying strategically, I cannot over emphasise this enough. You have max 4 choices. The “which medical school should I apply to” will be really helpful to you once you have your UCAT score. Post in the thread in the format of the first post. When you do, don’t ignore the bit about GCSEs, subjects and grades. For those that you resat show the original and the resit grades and make clear which they are as differing unis make different rules on resits.

I don’t know much about Cambridge scoring so I couldn’t say either way tbh, and it may be one of the strategic choices that work for you, and it may not.

More generally, In medicine there is no good /bad or top uni for medicine as they are all GMC regulated which is a good thing, but you have to apply to those that give you the best chance of an interview. So it’s hard to get too attached to one uni over another as it may not be on your strategic shortlist.

Overall, Your predicted grades and UCAT don’t sound as though they will be a concern, but your GCSEs may well determine where you can apply, not because they are bad at all, but because different unis use them in different ways when sifting for interview.

Thank you so much for your response!
I actually have my UCAT tomorrow so I’ll see how it goes 🤞 I’ll definitely try and be strategic and won’t apply to gcse heavy unis ( including Oxford and Cardiff ). After I receive my score I will post it in the forum!

thanks, G&M, have repped your post 🙂

hard to convey just how competitive applying for medicine can be
( know it does vary from year to year)
a high UCAT score opens up many more options, though, so hope it goes well for the year 12 who asked the question / started the thread
