Bristol or Southampton for philosophy?

Are there any students at these universities that can tell me their experience?
Hi there,

I'm glad to hear that you are considering the University of Southampton for your studies in Philosophy.

You can go to our Philosophy Page Link to view all the relevant Philosophy courses we offer. Whether you are planning to do UG or PG, the University of Southampton offers a variety of courses and modules. I am not a Philosophy student myself (I study Business Management), but I can say that the teaching methods at the university are fantastic, as they empathise practical knowledge and learning. I am always excited to go my lectures because they are taught by seasoned professors that carry so much experience. The assignments and coursework are also designed in a way that encourages critical thinking and are based on real-world scenarios.

Personally, I am really enjoying my time here as the student life is extremely fun and exciting. Southampton is a lively and student-friendly with good connectivity to London and other cities. The university has a vibrant campus with green spaces and beautiful gardens. During my first year, I felt that there was always something happening that I could get involved in! There are plenty of events taking place on the campus, and there are also many pubs and places you can go out to with friends.

Further, the university provides students access to a wide range of opportunities and activities that can help them gain work experience and develop essential skills, such as on-campus jobs, enterprise events, recruiter fairs, training programs, internships, and much more! I was a student ambassador during my first year, and I found it to be a great way to make some amazing new friends and earn money, all while balancing it with academics. Southampton University Students' Union is extremely active and offers students numerous events, clubs and societies (over 400), ranging from academic clubs to ones related to sports, hobbies or culture. I am a part of many different societies, namely Women in Business, Fish on Toast, Indian society and Kickboxing. Joining such societies helped me gain confidence, develop new skills and also expand my social circle.

In terms of student support, students are assigned a Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) to help them with any course related problems, there is a Student Hub which can be contacted 24/7 and the advice centre in the student Union. There is also the careers, employability and student enterprise team that supports students throughout in terms of work experience schemes, CV support, and much more! The university also provides fantastic facilities to students such as modern libraries, labs, a startup incubator, a sports centre which offers a range of fitness activities, and much more! The Hartley Library was like my second home during the first year, as I would spend most of my time working in the study pods there.

Ultimately it depends on what you think will be the right fit for you. I highly recommend visiting us on one of our open days, as it will be extremely helpful for you in making your decision.

I hope this helps!

If you have any further questions, please feel free to post your questions and I will be happy to get back to you as soon as possible.

Thank you,
