Stay at Leicester or go Lancaster

Hi

I just completed a foundation year at Uni of Leicester (G991) and achieved a 1st.

My main plan was to transfer to University of Nottingham however,
“The results you have achieved in your Foundation programme do not meet the requirements of the course”

Lancaster University however has said I’d be able to attend their university and study Computer Science G400

I’m not really sure what I should do. How much better is Lancaster than Leicester because the whole reason I wanted to transfer was to get into a better university despite my mediocre A-levels.
I’m conflicted because there’s so many things i need to consider (distance as I’m from london, accommodation prices etc.)

However, if Lancaster is levels above Leicester it would entice me to make the switch. What do you guys think, do you think the jump in rankings is worth a switch?

Im not sure on computer science, but it is higher in rankings on complete university guide by about 12 places in computer science. Overall Lancaster is 10th and Leicester is 36th. Travel wise, theres Lancaster to Euston on the train. Accommodation prices in halls are here at the bottom of the pages link: https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/accommodation/undergraduate/# Hopefully theres one of the lancaster reps on here that can answer, or chat to a student on line that studies computer science https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/study/chat/

Visit on an open day. It is higher ranking but whether that translates into a better experience, better degree or better career prospects does depend on what you feel about it compared where you are now.

Do either of the courses offer a placement year? This will add a lot to your graduate CV, especially for CS.

Hi @OrangeJay,
Firstly congratulations on your results. I'm currently in my 3rd year studying geography at Lancaster, so unfortunately cant provide any specific information on CS. However, i can say that i've really enjoyed my time at Lancaster, the university has a real community feeling to it, with lots of different societies to get involved in.
Lancaster is well connected to london by a direct train which takes 2.5 hrs. Also accommodation prices can be found here Undergraduate - Lancaster University
However, other important things to consider will be, have you enjoyed your time at Leicester studying and do you like the city itself. Do you feel settled in Leicester and want to stay or do you want a change of university and city to explore.
It could be worth visiting Lancaster on an open day to explore the university for yourself.
Hope this helps,

Lancaster probably better than Leicester but not hugely. But do you think you will struggle academically at a better Uni, no point going to Lancaster if you will struggle.

Hi @OrangeJay

Congratulations on completing your foundation year with a 1st! It's great that you have options for your next steps.

Leicester is a reputable university with strong Computer Science programs. It's important to consider other factors like location, accommodation costs, and your overall comfort. Leicester offers a supportive environment and solid opportunities, especially if proximity to London is important to you.

The decision should align with your priorities and where you think you'll thrive the most.

Best of luck with your choice!
