How "employable" is a Software Engineering degree in different fields

So I've just done my first year out of 3 of uni in software engineering, and I was thinking of going into data analysis, or IT or heck even accounting or something finance related after university - the talk of the CS market being says oversaturated and people being unemployed for months after finishing is really scaring me tbh - like severely impacting my mental health lol :frown:

So I was wondering..I intend to stick with this degree because I still enjoy it, but is it good for getting into fields or grad schemes like finance, analytics, IT etc?

I think you're already doing a fantastic degree and it's very employable in all the fields you mentioned Yes, there's lots of hype about people with degrees in CS being out of work, yet I know people who graduated with these very degrees in the last yr who were all snapped up pretty fast! apply yourself whilst on your degree. Join societies at your university and try and get an 'office'. look for work experience during term time, ask within your dept if they could do with some assistance, on campus tours, brand ambassador etc. Apply for internships, attend 'insight days' and network. Does your degree have a placement yr? these are the things that will make a difference when you start applying for jobs not whether you studied a different subject. Then prepare a **** hot resume and practice your cover letters and online assessment tests. Stick to your degree course and don't go faffing around with switching subjects.

Hey there, thanks! I do have a placement year but I'm still deciding if I am gonna do it (got some personal reasons, and we have till the end of 2nd year to decide), but yeah I am building projects rn too! I made a java cli loan management system that was technically coursework, and rn im working on a space invaders replica / inspired game

I've joined the cs society and went to a hackathon last year (did kinda meh in it but still I think that's good), and as for other experience, I do tutoring and also volunteered at a music place near me to help set up events and things - i also applied to be a TA in the uni but didn't get in so 😕

I do feel kinda behind at not having the retail part time job or Something like this yet..but I go to uni locally so I didn't need too much extra money 🙂 you think my current experience makes me a good (or at least, not ****) candidate for grad schemes and things - like eg idk how much not having specific finance / accounting experience at all will **** me over lol even if I get a 1st- ig on a couple I could link the tutoring and managing the money with that ig ?

I was just wanting to keep my options open haha, as even before doing the degree it was either software, or finance lol, so thanks so much for the advice! Its good to know I haven't pigeonholed myself

Thanks so much!
