Advice from a third year

Hi
I have just finished my third year at the University of Sheffield studying BSc Mathematics and Philosophy.
I have really enjoyed studying here and am currently planning on coming back to do a masters.
I have found it really helpful to find the lecture theatres in advance of the semester starting so that you know where you are going and can try to avoid getting lost. Some of the buildings can be a little hard to navigate, especially if you are running late and stressed, so going a day or two in advance and finding the room you need to be in might help. It also allows you to time yourself so you know how long it will take to get to the room.
At the beginning of the semester, societies run ‘Give It A Go’s which are a chance for you to test out the society and have a little taster before you decide to join for the whole semester or year. Societies are a great way to meet new people, stay busy and have fun. You might find you have lots of free time once you get to university which could be a new thing for you and so joining societies will give you more things to do each week. Alternatively, if you are really busy, they are a great way to relax and take a break from uni work.
There are plenty of opportunities to meet people and socialise throughout the year, and after the first year. You do not have to go to every event at the start of the semester. Take time for yourself and try not to over do it. You might not meet lots of people during freshers week, that’s ok, you have chances to find people later. It’s never too late to start something new or do something different.
If you are struggling, there are lots of people who can help in a range of ways. Each faculty has a wellbeing advisor who you can talk to and discuss any issues you are having. They will also be able to sign post you to other services that may be able to help.
I hope this post is helpful.
Let me know if you have any questions,
Lizzie (BSc Mathematics and Philosophy - University of Sheffield)
