Returning from study abroad..student finance

Hello.

In process of making an application for student finance.
My son (born in the Uk & a UK citizen and resident - Uk is his usual home) went to college overseas for 2 years and was unable to complete the course due to financial reasons, so he returned to the UK in Jan 2024. He has been offered a place on a UK based degree course for a Sept 2024 start but needs a fee and maintenance loan to finance, which he qualifies financially for.
Is he eligible for a student loan?

Thank you.

Hi student-uk,

Where has your son been resident for the 3 years before the start of his new course?

Thanks,
Calum

Thanks for confirming.

He would need to prove that the break in his residency was temporary.

If he had temporary Visas for the US we can accept that as evidence, or a letter from the HEP confirming it was temporary.

Thanks,
Ross

Thank you. He was not there continuously for 2 years, he came back to the UK for the summer and winter breaks. He left at the end of the autumn 2023 term and was just there for college, would the college transcripts be helpful? Just confirming, what is the HEP?

Hi student-uk,

We would need evidence that you son was outside the UK on a temporary basis, a college transcript wouldn't necessarily show this. The HEP is the university.

Thanks,
Calum

Ok, thanks. I will get a letter from the college confirming the dates he attended that he was there for study. Hopefully a place to attach on this on the application form along with a supporting letter detailing.
