My two children were given student finance and have now been told that it has been revoked. The reason being that they were not resident in the UK for 3 full years before starting their respective courses. My younger daughter applied for finance in May 2022 - having lived in UK for 2 years (not 3 as required). The finance was approved and she has now completed TWO years at university only to get notified yesterday that ALL of her finance has been revoked. She is going to speak to advisors at her university this morning.
My elder daughter applied for finance in May 2023 - having moved to the UK in November 2020. Her finance was initially approved and she has completed one year of a two-year accelerated teaching course. She was asked to resubmit documents in March, had countless hours on the phone to student finance (who were inconsistent in their advice, very slow to put anything in writing). She was then told her finance had been revoked and put in an appeal. Her initial appeal was denied on the basis that she had not lived in UK for long enough - but had she known BEFORE the course started, she could have started the same course in January 2024. Student finance have admitted that this was THEIR error, but have taken no responsibility for it. They have recalled fees paid to her university and she owes them for all of her maintenance (it was London and I'm a single parent on a teaching salary - so she qualified for maximum amount). She is now at the stage where she doesn't think she can continue with her course. She has been forced to resign from her job at a Pupil Referral Unit in London to move home (Wiltshire) as she cannot afford the rent in London.
I am not disputing whether my children were eligible for student funding. I am very cross that funding was initially given and has now been revoked. This means that they owe thousands of pounds and are not going to be able to finish their respective degrees - therefore limiting their earning potential and ability to repay at any point.
We are writing to our MPs to ask them to intervene. We will appeal - but I was wondering if anyone has had anything similar? How can student finance have made such an error. My children were not dishonest on their applications - it is evident where they were born, educated & when they moved to the UK. Someone in student finance didn't do due-diligence in checking those facts and is now causing my family a huge amount of pressure. IF the finance had initially been rejected, they would both have taken some time off before applying to university to ensure they were eligible.
