When are you meant to apply for summer internships?

I'm not sure if this is the right forum to put this so sorry in advance!
So I did my first year of software engineering BSc, and am on summer break from that
I see some opportunities say like "need to be in penultimate year" and the thing is for summer 2024
Is this meant for second years that are going into third year in summer 2024? Idk if I'm at the right level for that so I was just wanting to ask, thx for ur help!
...I go into second year in September this year , so should I be looking out for summer 2025? (There isn't many for this yet - and idk if I want to commute to London every day or something for a industrial placement as that is 2+hrs away...and moving there seems idk a hassle...and a bit scary xD (pls don't judge 😅)
Also I'm not sure if I actually want to go into software development anymore or if I want to switch to finance grad schemes in the future (I go to a non RG uni ) so idek if I can get placements unrelated to my course
so hopefully I still am in with a chance if I get good grades lol - I volunteer and stuff but that is unrelated to finance and SWE so idk if I should mention it if I do decide to go the finance route (probably not IB)
