Hi!
Most people will meet their flatmates when they arrive at their accommodation. However, a lot of people get in touch with each other via social media groups eg Facebook or forums such as here on the student room. Of course this is completely optional but many people (me included) found that speaking to flatmates prior to move in was reassuring.
There are also similar groups for course mates and general 2024 freshers if that is something you are interested in.

Hope this helps! Faye 🙂

Hi there,

Usually you just find out on move in day! I would recomned joining some group chats on Facebook though as this is a way you could potentially find out who you will be living with. On Facebook, you can search for group chats for your University and there will usually be one for freshers so yours might be called freshers 2024 or a similar name. From here you can also find groups for your accommodation so join the one which is for your accommodation that you will be living in. On here people post asking if there is anyone in their flat and you could also post 'Is anyone in flat ...' with the flat number you have and people will reply to you if they see it and are in your flat!

I did this before I moved in and I managed to find around half of my flatmates which was really nice as it meant I knew people before I moved in so it was less daunting when I moved in. We also sorted some things out such as what we were doing on freshers week etc so if you can do this it is good! The only thing I would say is there will be people in the groups putting loads of messages trying to sell freshers tickets so try and ignore this and only buy tickets if you actually want to go to the events.

If you don't find anyone, don't worry as it will still be fine meeting everyone on move in day. You might also find people who are in the flats near to you so this is also good and you can still find some people!

I hope this helps,

Hi there 👋,

Here are some of my top tips, for meeting new flatmates!:

see if there is a Facebook freshers page for your university, you can use these types of pages to ask questions, get to know people, find flatmates, and find out more about the town you are moving to.

remember most of the freshers will be feeling the same and will be nervous about moving in, just be yourself and be open to meeting new people from different places! It can be exciting but daunting moving in.

look at posting on forums/platforms/social media asking if anyone is moving into the same student accommodation as yourself.

Tips for when you arrive at university:

When moving in, keep your bedroom door open (if you feel comfortable doing this), then you can meet your flatmates and say hi!

Keep your things tidy and clean so that your flatmates feel comfortable (no one wants to live in an untidy flat)

Join a society/club for a hobby you enjoy, so that you can meet many different people.

Hope this helps!

Hi there!

In most cases, people will meet their flatmates when they arrive to their accommodation on the first day, however it is possible to connect with them before!

Often, there are social media groups where you can find out who your flatmates are. Many Universities create official facebook groups for new students. These groups are a great way to discover people on your course or in your flat. This is a great option if you want to find out who you may be living with before arriving on campus. Sometimes, there are specific groups for each halls of residence which can make it easier to connect with others living in the same building or flat.

It is also worth checking if your university has any official forums or online communities where students can interact. This may help find your fellow flatmates before the official moving in day.

I found a couple of my flatmates prior to moving in through facebook groups dedicated to Reading Freshers 2023. This made it easy for me to find who I was sharing my flat with and gave me the opportunity to introduce myself before the official move in day. It is dependent also on whether your flatmates are active in these groups, however it is worth trying! You may find people on your course if not, or even people in the same block of residence which can also be reassuring. 🙂

Good luck with your move and enjoy your time at university!

All the best,

Millie 🙂

Has anyone heard of this new student app, my friend just sent it to me @crcle.app - it looks like it would be a great way to meet people !

Hey there,

I totally understand how you are feeling right now, it's such an exciting but nerve wrecking time. I remember being so nervous about meeting my flatmates and getting to know them. I kept wondering who I would be living with and if we would get along.

To answer your question - often there are many official and unofficial student social media groups which can be used to socialise and meet your flatmates. I met a few of mine before I moved in which really helped ease some of my pre-arrival anxiety. I'd recommend to check if there are any such groups, though please be careful of possible scammers on the groups!

However, usually you get to meet your flatmates on the move in day! But don't worry, you'll still have plenty of time to get to know them and bond with them. Everyone is usually in the same boat - eager (and nervous) to meet new people and make friends.

Hi there,
Most people will meet their flatmates when they arrive at their student accommodation. You're not alone - I was just as full of anticipation when I first moved to uni.

Sometimes, you can find your flatmates before using social media. Uni specific or student focused city specific Facebook groups are good places to start.

If you can't find your flatmates that way, it'll just be all the more exciting when you do meet!
