Extra-curricular activities to help MIT application

Hi I`m thinking of applying to MIT to do engineering. i know it`s really competitive to get in as a(n international) student so since top A level scores are a given, which types of extra curricular activites would help boost an application? Ive read MIT want well rounded students so something to do with civic engagement might help? I`d welcome any ideas so I can start thinking on what to get involved with now. Thanks a lot!

Being well rounded definitely may help your application but make sure you are not too well rounded. Your extra curriculars should be meaningful to you as an individual and ideally things that can demonstrate an interest in your desired major at the same time (or skills needed to study it). You don't have to have a lot, but make sure they are things you are interested in and could potentially talk about in interviews, supplemental essays etc. For engineering, you could look at opportunities in STEM areas, whether that be tutoring physics or volunteering at a research centre. A lot of tier 1 school applicants tend to place a big emphasis on founding a non-profit, but I don't think this is necessary - especially if you are doing it for the wrong reasons (to gain a college acceptance). It might be a good idea to look at competitions or Olympiads in STEM areas so you can have some major extra curricular achievements - potentially on an international scale. Just make sure your extra curriculars are meaningful and you should be fine

MIT has an admission blog- read and re-read the "applying sideways" entry and read every other entry as well. GL
