Richard Pipes's book, A Concise History of the Russian Revolution is very good. A Concise History of the Russian Revolution: Amazon.co.uk: Pipes, Richard: 9780679745440: Books

I use it for some of the lessons I teach.

The first few chapters of Hosking's History of the Soviet Union will be helpful too. Both books are directed at first second year undergrads, so it shouldn't be a problem for you.
