Keep using HP Laptop or buy MacBook for uni?

So I currently have a HP 15s-fq2051na Laptop - Core i3 , it’s less than a year old however it’s not the fastest and battery life isn’t the best , I’m starting uni in September and I’m wondering wether it will be worth spending the money on a MacBook. I’m planning on taking my notes on my iPad so the laptop will be mainly for writing essays . Basically I’m asking can I manage with this cheaper laptop rather than splurging on an expensive one ??

A few questions:

. What course are you doing?
. What software will you be using?

Hi ,

I’ll be studying speech and language therapy and I don’t think we’re required to have any particular software.

Alright, nice. In that case, I'd say that if you have the available budget then a Macbook is a great investment, but I wouldn't say it's completely essential. Core i3 may struggle to keep up as you go throughout uni.

Hello. If your specification can handle essays and documentations and not use it for CAD software that relies on so much Random Access Memory (RAM), then I think it can do well for your intended course. It is always worth on investing a new laptop as contingency in case either you want a more powerful specification or in case your old one gave out.

From my experience of seven years in college, I have my own HP laptop that I have used for essays and content creation (videos and pictures) for around 8 years. I recently got a new laptop that is two years old. However, I tend to use my old laptop because of the upgraded RAM and storage I have installed years ago. That and sentimental reasons.

I have some good experience maintaining and repairing my own laptop and that allows my laptop to withstand further its intended five year lifespan.

If you want to use your old laptop in case you want to save money in the future, I suggest that you should get a new battery and extra RAM to unlock its full potential even if the CPU seem to do less.

Hi there,

I've just graduated and I spent the last three years taking notes on my iPad and writing essays on my older laptop. The battery on my laptop wasn't very good but I didn't find it an issue as universities have plug sockets all over the library and dotted around campus as well. I found that I also tended to write essays at home so I could just plug in my laptop when it needed it. The slowness of my laptop didn't really bother me too much either. When it was being slow turning on I could be doing something else like making a coffee or doing research on my iPad. Then while I was writing my essay I tended to use my iPad as a second screen and hall the articles I was looking at open on there so I didn't have to flick between tabs so google being slow on my laptop didn't bother me much either.

Really its all down to personal preference. If you feel like your laptop is not up to it, maybe look into getting a new one that's not quite as expensive as a MacBook.

Hope this helps.
