Paris 2024 Olympics: Rugby sevens

Welcome to the Paris Olympics 2024!

This thread is for the rugby sevens competitions.

Rugby sevens is a version of rugby union that is played with seven rather than fifteen players per team. Rather than lasting for the usual 80 minutes, games last for 14 minutes, 7 per half, which means that a whole competition can be played in a weekend or, in the case of the Olympics, across three days!

The men's tournament will run from Wednesday 24th to Saturday 27th July (with a break on the Friday), and the women's tournament will follow from Sunday 28th to Tuesday 30th July. The venue is the Stade de France, which is also hosting athletics (hence the sevens starts prior to the opening ceremony) and is the usual stadium for the French national rugby union team. They have actively chosen a larger venue than the two club rugby stadiums in Paris, the Stade Jean-Bouin and the La Défense Arena (which, bizarrely, is an indoor rugby arena that is actually hosting Olympic swimming!)

The pool draw is as follows:

Men's
Pool A: New Zealand, Ireland, South Africa, Japan
Pool B: Australia, Argentina, Samoa, Kenya
Pool C: Fiji, France, United States, Uruguay

Women's
Pool A: New Zealand, Fiji, Canada, China
Pool B: Australia, Ireland, Great Britain, South Africa
Pool C: France, United States, Japan, Brazil

The full schedule for the events is here. All matches can be streamed in the UK via Eurosport and Discovery+, and it is likely that the BBC will also dip in and out of the events.

While most of the players involved will be specialist sevens players, the lure of the Olympics has also drawn in a number of 15-a-side specialists, including Antoine Dupont for France, the men's best player in the world, Hugo Keenan at Ireland, 'Marky Mark' Nawaqanitawase for Australia, Selestino Ravutaumada for Fiji. On the women's side, look out for the retiring Portia Woodman, one of the greatest wingers to ever play the women's game, and Meg Jones and Ellie Kildunne, the latter of whom was the runaway (literally) Six Nations player of the tournament this year.

Which teams are the favorites for a victory and who do you think will really win after all?

Australia win against Samoa.
Argentina win against Kenya.
I'm watching it out of the corner of my eye in the office but Dupont's France playing now.

I don't really like Rugby Sevens. I am watching it because I'm bored.

I'll admit it does lack the variety and intrigue of a full 15-a-side game!

After day 1, to answer this question for the men's tournament: New Zealand and Fiji are always very strong and look very strong this year. Ireland also look really good, and will play New Zealand in the first session tomorrow for a real test.

Argentina are increasingly good and France are highly rated, but have maybe not been amazing today (though they've done enough). South Africa are usually good but were comprehensively beaten by New Zealand.
Quarter-finals in the men's competition from 8pm UK time!

New Zealand v South Africa
Argentina v France
Fiji v Ireland
Australia v United States

Four blockbusters really live on Eurosport 2 and (I believe) the BBC red button!

Yes it is on BBC Red Button and BBC iPlayer
Came off my Teams call to find SA had beaten NZ against the odds

Dupont leading France to a semi-final, and just feels like they're destined to go the whole way.

Presumably their semi-final is against SA, which is a huge game. (France lost a world cup quarter-final at the same stadium to SA at the start of this season!)

2 cracking semi finals so far.
Conversions helping Fiji beat Ireland in the end.

Obviously a massive deal for Fiji as it's the national sport and (I presume) their only serious medal hope.
Australia comfortably beat the US for the final semi-final spot.

On Saturday the medals will go to some combination of South Africa, France, Fiji and Australia!

Argentina and France in quarter finals means that one of these two favorites for a medal will be eliminated soon. My gutt feeling tells me that it is the French team.

I think it was the Argentinian team.

Yes, Argentina are gone now. They'll play in the 5th-8th placing matches.

My gut feeling is not a good one. I would have lost a great sum of money, if I would had had bet on Argentina.
