2 courses 1 personal statement

Hi like the title says, I want to study economics and sustainability/sustainable development but only 2 out of my 5 unis offer the course, for the other 3 I’m applying for just pure economics

What do I do? I REALLY want to study economics and sustainability but the majority of my unis don’t offer it and it’s also not like I’ll be miserable studying pure economics. Should I just write a ps for economics or should I write for economics and sustainability regardless of the fact that 3 unis don’t offer it

Advice wanted/needed x

I think you should write more about economics than sustainability/ sustainable development, but also write a bit about sustainability/ sustainable development because the 3 universities with the economics course might have modules related to sustainability.
Also, you should think about whether there’s a high chance you would get into the 2 universities with your grades, if you think you can, then write more about economics and sustainability, but if you think there’s a high risk then write more about economics.

I’ve looked through their modules, for the first one it offers it as optional module in both year 2 and 3. The second one offers it only in year 3 as an optional module and the third doesn’t offer it as a module at all.

If it was just that, it would be okay but one of the uni that do offer it gives a slight edge to the sustainability part, the course name is BSc Environment and Sustainable Development with Economics and it is my firm choice at the moment but I worry that if I focus too much on the environment part they might reject the application. And while I definitely think I can get in, The competition at the uni is quite high

Either way I’ll be writing to the uni and hopefully I should get a response. More advice wanted

Heya~ I just wanted to ask which unis did you apply for the courses and how are you right now? Also I want to ask what subjects you take! Because I plan to do the exact same course as you are! But I'm like a year away from uni applications! I hope everything went great for you! It's rare to see someone else care about the environment and do related things!

Hi Alisa, it is really great seeing someone who also cares about the environment, the world really needs more people like us. To answer your questions, I do economics, maths and sociology and while I don’t regret any of my subjects (maybe except maths lol) I do kinda wish I did geography or environmental science (but my college doesn’t offer this)

An update since my post: the more I researched and read and listened and engaged with the subject of our environment and all in it, the more I started to really dislike traditional economics so I didn’t apply to any pure econ courses

I applied for Land economy at Cambridge
BScEnvironment and SustainableDevelopment with Economics at Lse
Economic studies and GSD at Warwick
Applied for development studies at Manchester but changed it to Environmental Management
Sustainable development integrated masters at Edinburgh

I’m doing great honestly, I’m happy with my courses and looking forward to the future
I’m hearing back from Cambridge today
I got rejected from Lse cause I didn’t meet their maths requirements (which was disappointing but probably for the best)
Warwick hasn’t gotten back to me
And I have offers from Manchester and Edinburgh

The final copy of my PS discussed the intersection of growth and the environmental, the conflict and how they can be aligned(…sort of)

If you have any more questions, I am more than happy to answer them. I sincerely hope everything goes great for you too 🫶❤️.

Also for LSE, I wanted to ask did you have to take the TMUA? On it's website it didnt list this programme as one that needed the TMUA, I'm personally quite worried about maths so I might not make the requirement either haha.
Old thread but going back to the original question - I would have contacted the unis offering the more niche course option and asked whether they would accept a statement submitted to them directly. If not many unis offer it, this is something that some are okay with.
