How does having studied abroad affect my UK student status for Student Finance?

Hello. I'm planning on starting a PGCE course in September, but have found the student finance application a little confusing. One of the questions asked was whether I have lived outside of the UK during the last 3 years, and as I studied languages at undergraduate, I have spent some time overseas on my year abroad (as a language assistant through the British Council). However, since it was part of my studies at a UK university and as I returned home to the UK during the holidays, I wasn't sure if I ought to count this as living abroad for the purposes of my student finance application? If I should count it, when it asks about my address history, ought I to give both the address I lived at during my university studies and my home address (but there isn't supposed to be any overlap, so I imagine I'd have to input each address multiple times), (as well as my address from year abroad)? Is having lived abroad for my studies likely to affect whether my application for funding is successful? One more query: in terms of the teaching bursary, will the funding for that be affected at all by my application for student finance being a little late, and do you have to apply for a maintenance loan in order to be eligible for the bursary? Sorry for having so many questions, and thanks very much for taking the time to read this.

Hi there,

If you time outside the UK was part of your undergraduate course study abroad year, this should be fine. If we asked for evidence you would show proof it was part of your course abroad.

We don't deal with the teaching bursary, you would be best speaking to you university for information on this.

Thanks,
Claire

Hi Claire,Thanks very much! Should I answer that I have lived outside the UK and then just fill out the address history section in that case?

Hi Gribby2,

That's correct, you would just indicate this on the application and any evidence you have that is applicable, you can provide after you have submitted the application. You can upload this evidence type to your online account for review.

Thanks. Just to clarify, ought I to include both my university and home addresses when filling out the address history, and if so, how should I format this? Do I only need to upload evidence if it's asked for? I'm not really sure how to do this. Thanks again

Hi there. For your address history we only ask for the address you were living at for the dates requested and not your University address. We will only require evidence if this is requested so nothing is required at the moment. Thanks, David
