A-level Preparation

I am in Year 11 awaiting my GCSE results. I'm expecting all 6-9s, with a 9 in maths, 8 in F maths, 9 in RE and 7 in English Lang.

Next year I am going to study Maths, Further maths, economics, Philosophy and maybe EPQ

I'd like to either study PPE or Philosophy and theology at LSE or Oxford

If there is any advice you could give me or things I should do in advance or throughout sixth form please let me know. Thx

Hi. Firstly congrats on your grades. They look decent, and I applaud the solid set of A-Levels. I would recommend looking into essay writing competitions, particularly in politics and economics (philosophy is always oversubscribed but you can still do some if you wish). You should check out John Locke essay writing competition, as it has all of these categories, and even if you don't win a prize, you can talk about it on your PS/interview. Good luck!

Start preparing for your subjects now! Start making some flashcards if you want! But try and be ahead because that’s almost 5 a levels and a lot of work ! You want to make sure you get a good number of A* in a levels if your applying to LSE. Idk about Oxford for PPE or philosophy but I think they heavily weight GCSEs which might not be ideal but idk I know that is only the case for medicine. Overall start preparing now and don’t wait!!

Nice choice of A levels! Have you considered a Maths and philosophy course? Seems like it would use both of your strengths and give you a degree that is much more useable. Oxford does it and so do many other universities. Might be worth checking out.

Thank you, I'm planning on doing some essay competitions next year and over the summer. Hope it'll help.

Thank you so much, I'll try my best! if i do find any of the content difficult should I just move on or should i prioritise understanding the content first. Also, for philosophy aqa a level do you have any useful sites/yt channel could watch.

There are so many opportunities that open up on the Cambridge and Oxford events listing. Things like summer schools, masterclasses, webinars, competitions, so make sure to check throughout the year. They are really useful for preparing for university. A few examples:

Lucy Cavendish academic attainment programme
Balliol Floreat programme
Sutton trust
Robinson access programme

Most of the opportunities open from September to December. I did the Bristol virtual summer school and they gave everyone a 2 grade reduction. Now I only need ABB.

The summer schools tend to be for state school students only but the webinars are pretty much for everyone

Do you think I'd be able to get a free copy anywhere and is it really useful? Would you say its just better off starting A-level content straight away?
