Hello, I'm not really sure on what books I want to do but I need one pre-1900s and one post-1900s. I kinda am leaning towards gothic theme so I think I might do Dracula but I don't know what to compare it too? Does anyone know any suggestions or other books relating to this theme or another theme. I'm open to any suggestions

You're in luck 🙂 I just helped one of my friends decide books for her NEA based on the same genre. You could try comparing Dracula with Anno Dracula by Kim Newman i think or the first book book from Fred Saberhagen with the same title as Bram Stoker's. I think Fred's is a good one because it is about the events of the original Dracula but from Dracula's perspective.
Other gothic books you could compare in the same genre could be "Woman in White", "Frankenstein", "Rebecca" (i personally found the synopsis of this one interesting), Jekyll and Hyde.
If already sure about doing "Dracula" you could compare it with Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice.
I hope it wasn't overwhelming, and I hope I made it easier for you. As a sixth former who has just about managed to choose her books, I would hope I helped you 🙂 Good luck!

If you do have second thoughts about the theme, I could help with that too

Hello, thank you so so much for these suggestions after reading some of Dracula im not sure if I’d enjoy writing about it, however I recently have been reading the stepford wives (feminist horror novel) which I really really am enjoying right now, I also feel like that would be easier to write about but I’m not sure what to compare it to. I need a pre1900s book as Stepford wives was published 1972. I’m so sorry for bothering you but I don’t know what to compare it to ☹️
Thank you again for helping me before

Ok for my NEA I’m doing Frankenstein and the heart of a dog I know you want to do Dracula so that’s your pre 1900s book I’d recommend looking at themes first and things you enjoy reading about them searching for your second book. If you I ow what you want to write about and what you want to read about finding a book to compare it with should become easier

not to worry. the ideal book to go along with would've been jane eyre but i'm not sure if it is a banned text for you. if it is, the yellow wallpaper is a crowd favourite for NEA's also Middlemarch which could help explore feminity and its representations across time. If the theme you're comparing is horror, i think Frankenstein is good.
