I’m in y12 going into y13 and currently considering maritime engineering. Southampton and Newcastle are the only unis that offer this course that I’m interested in. I’m not sure what to do about my other 3 options. What do I do?

Hi there!
It's great to hear that you are considering coming to Southampton! In terms of your question, the first thing I'd say is that you don't need to apply to 5 universities, that is just the maximum that you can. I, myself, applied to 3 as they were the only ones that I was happy going to.
However, if you want to explore options and you do want to be able to apply to more, I would definitely do more research into similar degrees. There is a variety of engineering degrees offered at different universities that you might find interesting. In terms of a starting point, if you know you are interested in a certain university, you could go on their website and look at the different degrees offered. On the other hand, if you aren't leaning towards a specific university, you could go on UCAS and search for engineering in the course search, and look through the different options available. When researching courses and universities, I found that ordering prospectuses was really helpful to get a feel for the different universities and it helped me narrow it down.

mechanical is probably a solid option if it’s your ambition to work on maritime technology (id assume maritime engineering is broadly mechanical engineering with increased focus on that industry).
Maritime system technologies & the associated physics are not dissimilar to road & air transport. The differences are more the operating environment & requirements (unique challenges but the physics is the same).
