Laptop for nursing student?

Hii, so I’m getting a laptop for uni (UK) soon and I’m stuck between three atm.

The Zenbook 14 i5 8GB 516GB SSD
The Galaxy Book 4 i5 8GB 256GB SSD
or a MacBook Air (M1, 8GB 256GB SSD)

Thing is I have an iPad, so technically if I’m planning to get a keyboard for it, imo it would feel weird to have that and a MacBook, despite their great compatibility.

I would get the Galaxy Book, but idk if it will run all the programmes I’ll need it to run for my course. E.g. simulations (same issue for the MacBook)

But idk if the Zenbook will last long due to some reviews saying that they had issues further down the line.

But MacBooks hardly have issues (I think?) and I would prefer to not have to replace my laptop after a few months.

Any advice would be appreciated

People have such a range of laptops/tablets i guess its what you like/get on with when writing assignments.
This year we did a couple of online simulation rooms and in 1 of them they did say that it wont work on macbooks properly, but i think those with macbooks still managed to do the task.
Honestly theres no "this is best" i have (i think) a asus but could be completely wrong. Its whatever DSA gave me 😂 and i use word, powerpoint and the internet on it pretty much. Just use what you find easiest

Hello Tania_122,

Congratulations on getting onto a nursing course! At University people use a wide range of different laptops however, people also do there assignments and lecture notes on iPads with a keyboard it’s completely your preference! Inedibly you will still have your device and a notepad with everything written down!

In regards to running programmes such as your simulation programmes the university packages for simulation are pretty universal and the library team can always help if you have I.T issues. Furthermore, you can also use the computers in the library.

For my nursing degree I have a MacBook Air and I haven’t ran into any problems and I like the option for sharing screen with my iPad when doing assignments however, once again this is completely personal preference and you should get whichever laptop you’re used to and feel most suited to.

Hope this helps,

I prefer Windows to IOS and it's typically more affordable. 256Gb sounds like like plenty of storage if you are just using it for school/internet. They both have the same processor so I would go with the Galaxy book strictly based on hardware/software and your potential needs.

How much would you be paying for any of those 3 laptops?
I'm willing to bet that none of them make financial sense.
As a student nurse, you're not made of money.

Offer £225 for this fully working, good condition, used premium business laptop:
HP 845 G7 on ebay

Or, for something smaller, lighter and cheaper, at the expense of a smaller screen there's this spiffing laptop for £185:
HP 835 G7

Go for the 13.3" laptop if you'll be walking round or on the bus or on the train a lot with it and you're towards the slim end of the build spectrum.
Go for the 14" if you're of medium build, or only moderate walking, bus train carrying of the laptop.
Go for a 15.6" or 16" if you have a gym honed body or minimal walking, bus train with the laptop.

For your needs these HP laptops will be lightning fast. They will run all the software you need for your course fine. They will be nice to own and use, thanks to the really well engineered aluminium construction, good quality keyboard, screen, trackpad.

Haha, fair enough, thank you for telling me about your experience and for your advice. Ig I was conscious about “getting it right” that I may have overthought it a bit. I was planning on just bringing my iPad to lectures but it’s safe to say it’s probs not a great idea esp. if I have a simulation that day 😂 Thanks again

Thank you for your advice! I will take your advice and go with what I’m confortable with. I’ve tried a MacBook and sadly didn’t like it. But I have tried a Galaxy Book and I really liked it, so I think I’ll go for that.
Thanks for your input, I really appreciate it!

Okay, thank you for your reply, it genuinely made me laugh lolll. Never really thought about it like that. I’ll be a nursing student soon tbf. Well, I agree that the pricing might be a bit high, but I did put a lot of thought into it and these are the ones I’m willing to get.
They cost about £500+, but I’d rather invest in something that’ll last a long time and it’d be my first (proper) laptop so I’d like to buy it new 😊 but if I had had one previously I’d be more inclined to go for the ones you’ve suggested, but I will keep them in mind in the future if I do eventually need another one!
I also really appreciate you going into detail about which laptop (screen) size I should consider based on characteristics such as travel, etc. They were things I wouldn’t have thought of.
Thanks again, I appreciate your input

Alright, thank you! I agree and I’m thinking about getting this one myself. Most uni’s have MacBooks on the site if I actually need one so I’m sure it’ll be fine 😂

Make sure you have a pocket-sized notebook for simulation days/placement to make a note of things you might forget.
