Children’s vs adult nursing

Hello everyone. I am hoping to start studying children’s nursing sept 2025 after completing an access course. My heart is in children’s nursing but I’m really worried around job opportunities compared to the large job opportunities within adult nursing. Has anyone else completed their nursing and found job opportunity good. As I’m stuck between which one to do x

If your heart is in children's nursing, please don't do adult nursing.
More adult nurses are needed than children's nurses because more adults exist than children. There are ample job opportunities within children's nursing.

Could you do a joint degree? I recently went to an open day at Plymouth and they have a course with an integrated Masters as MNurs where you are registered within 2 disciplines when you complete https://www.plymouth.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate/mnurs-nursing-adult-health-and-child-health

Children nurse here-just recently graduated 🎓
I found a job easily-I had just one interview which was successful.
Bear in mind Children nursing is much more competitive and its only very small number of available spaces-make sure your grades are excellent, do some volunteering with children like a nursery job or hospital volunteering it's important for personal statement. I applied for 5 universities, get accepted by 4. One didn't even invite me fir interview because they prefer Alevels and I had access course. It's totally doable, just work hard-keep my fingers crossed.

Hi,

I'm currently a 2nd year childrens nurse at Wrexham University, through my experiences so far I have found the course has been amazing! 🙂

As Childrens Nursing is more specific there is generally more competition - however if you do decide to go down this route don't let this stop you! - all forms of nursing have their own benefits and set backs dependent upon your overall aim. This can be seen in a bit more detail in Wrexham Universities Comparison below:

Majority of students get a job following qualification and registration as a nurse, just because Child field is smaller than adult doesn't mean that it is necessarily harder to get a job. The total amount of spaces on the course in the country is done proportionately to the amount of jobs that are predicted to be avaliable the year in which you graduate, so dont panic! In Wales you can commit to the NHS bursary (even as an English or Scottish student! - this is the route I have gone with 🙂 ) this ensures you have a job no matter what following your graduation; you must commit to completing two years in the Welsh NHS however this is more than doable.

There are so many areas you can go into with Childrens nursing, and don't forget you can go into acute or community settings depending on what suits you best! Some areas you can go into include: A&E, District Nursing, Outpatients, Minor Injuries, Childrens Wards - general or specific, Special Care Baby Units (SCBU) / Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU), Paediatric Intensive Care Units (PICU) and many many more!

I hope this helps, feel free to ask anymore questions you may have, and good luck! 🙂
