Pharmacy interview tips

For the people who got their interviews accepted, what is the process like and how did you prepare for it? My firm choice is Uni of Nottingham and they have MMIs which I've never really heard of until now. I have had mock interviews in school but I didn't find much value in it because I was interviewed by someone not in the healthcare sector. I've also been to some uni open days and a few talk about being able to do pharmacy calculations in the interview. If any pharmacy students or pharmacists that have just graduated could give tips it would be helpful.

Hey! I’m starting at Nottingham this year and absolutely tanked my interview- above all I think they’ll be looking for an interest in the career and a realistic perception of the profession/prior knowledge/enthusiasm. Of course all Pharm interviews will need you to know GPhC standards, general roles of Pharmacist, sectors of Pharmacy/common career choices, show a good ethical and moral stance, understanding of good patient care etc. and some contain basic maths and A-Level (ish) chemistry: consider what would be most important to the course e.g. functional groups and how they affect a molecule’s properties. All will probably have some clinical calculations actually (I’m remembering stuff as I write sorry, I blanked a lot of it out due to stress🤓) but nothing major to stress about.

Honestly, if you’re preparing this early and asking questions on TSR, you’re probably more prepared and invested than a lot of applicants who just want to do some kind of healthcare course with decent pay. I sobbed for a few hours after my interview because it went so badly, but I think my saving grace was the station about the profession itself and a realistic perception of life as a Pharmacist. A uni like Notts will likely be a fifth choice for lots of med/dentistry students, so if you show you care about the career and it’s what you want to do, you should be good! Let me know if there’s anything else I can help with, my pms are open too👩🏻*⚕️

Hi @t0ky0trash
I am currently a pharmacy student at the university of Nottingham, and I help coordinate and run the interviews for the school of pharmacy.

The interviews are used in order to get a sense of what you are like as a person, and also whether or not the skills you have are a good foundation for the rest of the course. The chemistry, ethical and other questions are not trying to catch you out and are not particularly hard if you remember things from A-level chemistry and use your common sense for the ethical questions ( I always find it helpful to put myself in the patients place and wonder what I might feel about the situation and how I would want the pharmacist to deal with the situation from a patients point of view)

Interviews can be stressful, and the interviewers know that, so don't worry if you can get the answer or struggle to think as it is a very high pressured environment and that is taken into account.

If you have anymore questions about the interview process, I'll try and answer as best I can.

Many thanks, Dom

Bit more relieved now that I've seen this lol. Also how long are the interviews and are they done by one person?

The interviews are know as MMI’S (Multiple mini interviews), and so are split up into 4 different sections, each one done by a different member of staff, unless you do the interview online where it’ll be done by one member of staff. This means that if you’re with a member of staff you don’t particularly gel with (which I highly doubt, they’re all lovely) then you’ll also be assessed by another 3 different members of staff. The entire process from signing in for the interview to the end takes the best part of an hour but the interview itself takes 30ish minutes.
