Hey there,

Usually, on the move in day you will be welcomed by the accommodation team. They will show you your room, give you the keys to your room and post box. Please, be aware that often no beddings are provided, so make sure you have your own bedding with you. Also I recommend to claim a shelf in the kitchen as soon as you arrive so you can get the best one.

After that you will start meeting your flatmates. Be friendly and start building connection with them as they are the people you will be living with for at least a year.

Sometimes there might also be a welcome party, so make sure to look around for any announcements.

And that's it, there is nothing scary at all

Please, let me know if you have any questions,

Ilya

Don't forget you'll meet your flatmates (idk why, but I guess when I moved inna few years ago I was so nervous, I completely forgot I'd have flatmates to meet! ). Some people took icebreakers like sweets or biscuits, and one lad brought truth or dare which we played later on :yep:

Also, don't forget to bring toilet roll - usually isn't provided in uni accomm, unless shared bathroom but this sometimes depends.

Lots of people go shopping afterwards, but it's useful to bring something to put in the fridge and freezer to 'claim' a space. Try not to go for cupboards under the sink/near the ovens as people will often be cooking there, and it can be annoying to have to ask them to move.

Be aware that most housemates will stick to a shelf system in the fridge, individual cupboards etc…

So try and get the biggest one!

Hi there,

This is some great advice! I think it's a great idea to bring some of your favourite snacks to share, as that tends to break up the awkwardness of meeting everyone for the first time.

Something I would also add is if you want a better idea on how your individual university will do things, try finding their 'Chat to a Student' feature on their website. Someone attending that university will definitely have more knowledge on how move-in will actually go (and they could have their own experience in living there), so this might put any worries to rest.

I hope this helps,

Hi there,

Moving day can be very busy but also is an exciting time! Usually, you will be checked in and met by the accommodation team who will give you some information and your keys.

When I moved in, I unpacked my kitchen stuff first to make sure I have a decent cupboard in the kitchen as students go for them as a first come first served bases.

Your room can wait but also don’t feel the pressure to unpack everything on the first day. You want to start meeting people and making connections as soon you can. I would like to add if you haven’t already joined a Facebook group for your accommodation and course this is also a great way to connect with your flatmates before moving in, making it a lot easier on the first day.

There will usually be freshers and welcome events happening from the the week you move in so I would keep an eye out for that and see what your flatmates are doing to start making those connections. 😊

Hope this helps.

Hi there,

When you arrive to your accommodation you will check in at reception and they will give you your key and tell you where your room is etc. You might need some form of ID to be able to check in and sometimes you also might need proof of enrolment at your university but this depends on the accommodation so you might not need this but it is good to have just in case you need it.

You might have a specific time slot in which you need to move your stuff in by and if you have family or friends helping you to move in they might have a certain amount of time they are allowed to park there for as so many people will be moving in so it is worth checking this out before you arrive.

After moving in, lots of people might go out for meals or drinks etc with their families so there might not be many people in the flat, but not everyone does this. I would recommend to unpack as much of your stuff as you can on the first day as having boxes around for a while can make the room feel not like home and it can be quite stressful but don't spend all day unpacking if you have a lot of stuff, some of it can wait.

I would then just say to try and socialise with some of your new flatmates. They might want to go out that night so if you like going out then go with them as it is a great way of breaking the ice with people and it helps you to get to know them well. If you are going out with them and you like drinking, make sure you bring some drinks if you have pre drinks as everyone will do this so it is good to do. If you don't like drinking or going out then don't worry as there will be lots of other opportunities to socialise with everyone!

I would also just say to try and spend as much time as you can in the kitchen or other social areas so that you can get to know your flatmates and make friends with them. Don't be afraid to ask them to do something or go out with you f you want to do something as they will most likely say yes as everyone wants to make friends and this is a great way of doing so.

Also, if you haven't already, I would join some groups on Facebook as this is a good way of potentially meeting some of your new flatmates. You can look on Facebook and find your accommodation group as there will most likely be one and from here you might be able find some of your new flatmates as people will post "who's in x flat" with the number of their flat and people will reply so I would say to do this!

I hope some of this helps,
