Nursing - student finance and earning

I'm 40yrs old and about to start nursing full time in Wrexham. I've applied for fees with the Welsh finance people (I forget their name!) Am I right in thinking because I'm living in England Im not entitled to anything else from Wales and because I'm studying in Wales I'm not eligible for any LSF or NHS bursaries??

Also, for context I live with my fiance and we are 100% financially independent, always have been but his earnings obviously are taken into account when considering what I could get loan/grant wise. He's agreed to pay any household/joint related bills whilst I'm at uni but my own finances are my responsibility. Which I think is reasonable given I'm the one having a mid life crisis and going to uni as an old lady!! I keep hearing people say it's impossible to earn whilst doing nursing but I'm going to have to. What's the reality??

Grateful for any and all insights

It's correct that you won't be able to apply to the NHS LSF for the annual training grant if you are studying at a uni in Wales. You might want to reconsider applying for the NHS Wales Bursary as students who live in England don't get much maintenance support if they apply for the bursary. Rejecting the NHS Wales bursary and applying to SFE for tuition fee and full maintenance loans might be a better option for you.

The Welsh NHS bursary is split into three parts, the tuition fees (up to £9,250), the grant (£1,000) and the means-tested element (for your living costs). The means-tested element is based on household income and is a maxiumum of £2,643 a year that covers 30 weeks of the course. If you course runs longer than this, then you will receive £84 for every addition week. This is if your household income is below £24,000. Anything above will gradually reduce the means-tested element and when household income reaches £50,000, the means-tested element gets wiped out. The reduced maintenance loan available from SFE (if you take the Welsh bursary) is currently £2,670. So the maximum amount you could get to cover living costs is £6,313 (figures for 2024-25). Compare this to the maximum maintenance loan you could get from SFE of £10,227 (subject to household income).

Another option is to keep an eye on clearing options for unis in England so that you could also get the NHS LSF.

Hi @Karrrrp 👋

It's great to hear that you are thinking of studying at Wrexham. Which nursing course are you looking to apply to?

In terms of the NHS bursary scheme, the scheme provides financial support for tuition fees and a contribution towards living costs for all eligible home UK students coming to study an eligible healthcare course in Wales. This is subject to new students committing in advance to work in the NHS in Wales for two years.

If you contact our friendly enquiries team at [email protected] , they will be able to discuss this in more detail with you and talk through your options.
