Regretting my choice - Placement year vs Summer Internship?

I started my engineering placement that I applied to in June last week. I have not settled in well as I have quite severe anxiety amongst other reasons. Although it is an engineering placement and the skills I learn will be relevant to my degree and future work, it is not in the field I wish to enter. However, I applied to a summer internship in the field that I want to enter back in March, however they have only just gotten back to be giving me the role.

I am massively regretting taking the placement year role but I just did what was best at the time. However, I would still benefit from the placement year and graduate with my peers which is important to me. In addition, I couldn't guarantee that I would get another placement after the summer internship which means I would go back to uni.

I also have to add, it is very hard to get a summer internship in this field and I used a really good presentation that I could not use again so I would not be able to guarantee I would get it again.

Very unsure of what to do.

Take the position more in line with your career goals. Sounds like you applied to the placement last week, and got it within a week? if its that easy you should just reapply after you graduate.

I'd do the summer internship and keep applying for any placements that have intake for after september.

Could be better making a meeting with your careers team at uni since this is all a little vague.
