Will I still get a first class honours in my certificate if I fail one assessment ?

Hey Everyone,

Im a final year student. It contains four modules each consisting of 30 credits.

I had a submission yesterday, This module consists of two assesments.
assessment 1 contains 20% of the coursework
And Assessment 2 which is an exam contains 80% of the coursework.

I had the first submission for assessment one (which has 20% of the coursework). It is a 100 mark assignment.
Due to my carelessness I uploaded the wrong incomplete document in a hurry and I'm really scared that I will fail.

Incase if i get to redo it'll be capped at 40 marks.

1. Could you tell me how will we be graded overall for this particular module. With the 40 marks (20% of course work) and the 100 marks, 80% of the coursework for the next assesment??

2. In terms of the final degree certificate, will I not be able to get a first class honours certificate. If I will have to re-do just this one Assessment which is 20% of this particular subject?

3. What If I get first marks for everything else. Will i still not get a first class?

Also the final year is of a 120 credits overall with 30 credits each module

1. Even if we assume that 20% of the marks for this module will be capped at 40%, we can't tell you "how will we be graded overall for this particular module* without knowing your mark for the other assessment (i.e. the other 80% of the module). Your overall module mark will simply be 20% of the first mark (i.e. 20% of 40) plus 80% of the second.

2. You will almost certainly need to pass this module. However, you might be able to pass the module even if you've failed the first assessment - it depends on the module specification. (Sometimes you need to pass each assessment, whikst sometimes you only need to pass the module overall.) This one assessment in one module is very unlikely (mathematically) to make a major impact on your final grade. How much is your final year worth, in terms of the overall degree classification?

3. Every university has different rules. Your 20% of the 30% this module is worth is 6% of your final year. Your final year is with perhaps 2/3 of your overall degree classification (do you know the weightings?) So that 6% becomes worth 4%. So if you scored zero in it, it would lower your overall mark by 4%. Are you very close to the magic 70% boundary for a first?

This is my first assessment after starting final year.
Overall it has 120 credits, consisting of four modules with 30 credits each. I haven't still done my second exam 80% of the coursework yet.
However the 20% is a 100 mark and 80% is a 100 mark. Unfortunately I know im going to resit for the first 20% which will be capped at 40 marks.

So do you think im lucky enough to be awarded with a first class honours degree if I score waaaaay higherr above 70-80 for everything else? 😕 A 70 marks is a first according to my uni.

We know your mark for 6% of this year (i.e. 40%), which is likely about 4% of your overall degree. We don't know how well you've done (or will do) in the other 96% (or so). Do you?

I asked above, "Are you very close to the magic 70% boundary for a first?" You didn't reply.
I said above that, "Your final year is with perhaps 2/3 of your overall degree classification (do you know the weightings?)". You didn't reply.

I get the impression that you're not actually looking for an accurate, well researched answer. You're just looking for someone to tell you not to worry and that everything will be all right. So here goes...

Don't worry, everything will be alright.

I did not reply because I didn't really get what you asked. What do you mean by are you very to the 70% boundary? You mean in my future assessments?
Im sure I can get above 70% for everything. By the will of god.

And no I do not know the weightings..

Also, does this mean If I do well for the rest of the 96% I will get a first class degree?

Well, you said "Im a final year student." That would tend to suggest that you know the marks you obtained in Year 1 and that you know the marks you obtained in Year 2. Given that you say that "A 70 marks is a first according to my uni" (and it's rarely that simple, by the way) I was asking whether you achieved 70% in Year 1 and/or in Year 2, and whether you just exceeded the 70% threshold or whether you were well clear of it (perhaps at 80%).

What uni are you at? (I can just look-up the weightings.)

Yes.

Can I just confirm one final thing. You say, "Im a final year student" but you also talk about "future assessments". The academic year for undergraduate degrees in the UK almost always run from September or October to June or July. You write as if your final year has only just started. Is that the case? When does your academic year start and end?

So I completed my HND at a different uni. They did not have gradings with marks out of 100. It went as distinction, merit and pass. To be specific they gave us a criteria table mentioning what we have to do under the pass, merit and distinction criteria. I got an overall distinction for my HND.

Then I enrolled for the top up at the University of Bedfordshire. I enrolled for the may intake . So here they give marks out of 100 here.
Which is a 70 and above is first class then
60-69 upper second.
50-59 lower second

Yes I just started it in may they informed us that it will end in February. So this is the first ever assignment I submitted for this year.
I hope I answered all your questions

Ah, that makes more sense!

Take a look at Section 5a of Bedfordshire's Academic Regulations, here. Paragraph 6.10 explains the two different ways they calculate your final degree classification - either using only the credits from both the penultimate and final stages of the programme of study, or just those at the final stage. As you're doing a top-up degree from a HND, it seems clearly they they'll just used the credits form the final state - i.e. those you actually gain at University of Bedfordshire. They calculate your final degree classifications as follows:

"6.14 The Honours classification is based on the average of the marks attained in 90 credits at the final stage, including at least 30 credits from the designated project."

As you're doing 120 credits this year, it means they ignore the marks from one entire 30-credit module (as long as it's not "the designated project"). As a result, the capped 40% will have precisely zero impact on your overall degree classification. So just ensure you average 70% or above in the other three modules!

Finally, note that the bottom of page 3 and the top of page 4 (within Section 5a - link above) list quite a few degrees which don't follow the "normal" regulations in some way. So check that your course isn't on that list. If it is, let me know and I'll check how the rules for that course vary from the norm.

Omg thank youu. Oh yes I understood now i read that section.
So they will definitely include the 30 credits from the designated project which means the Final research project right. It stands alone as a single project with 30 credits.

So we have two core units and two elective units. I wonder which unit they would completely ignore.

And yes about that list my course doesn't appear in that I think I checked twice. Mine is BA hons in marketing. So this MEANS THE NORMAL RULES DOES APPPLY AND like you what you mentioned above the assessment capped at 40% makes zero impact and I CAN PASS WITH A FIRST CLASS HONOURS DEGREEE IF I GET WAY ABOVE 70 FOR THE REST? 🥺❤️

The module they'll ignore will be just be the one with the lowest marks - i.e. probably the one with the assessment capped at 40%.

Also, you don't need to get "WAY ABOVE 70 FOR THE REST". Just 70% will do.

Like how did you come to a conclusion that it will be the one capped at 40 because this module says its a core unit.
But then I really pray to god that the one they ignore should be this one.

Oh 70% will do then.
Thank you soo much for all your precious time.
Appreciate it a lot. I feel much more motivated to study well now. ❤️❤️ May God Bless you

Well, I don't know they'll use the results from then best 90 credits (because they don't specifically say that). However (a) that's the most logical thing for them to do and (b) I've read the academic regulations for a lot of unis, and if they don't use all the credits for a particular year, they always use the best credits.
