Could I get accepted into Peter Symonds College?

I have just finished year 10 and am starting year 11 in September. Peter Symonds is my ideal college but it is quite prestigious so I don't know if I will get accepted there with these end of year grades.

My predicted grades (for the end of year 11) are:
Biology - 9
Physics - 9
Chemistry - 8
Geography- 8
English Language - 8
English Literature - 7
Mathematics - 7
Computer Science - 7
French - 3

Any help would be much appreciated; I am quite happy with my grades but I am worried that my French grade will hold me back. (I will try very hard to improve it but I have heard that Colleges use mock grades/predicted grades for applications)

In summary- am I competitive enough to get accepted into Peter Symonds College with these predicted grades? Also, does behaviour play a part in applications to college?

Thanks!

Thank you very much

You need to check their over-subscriptions policy. This tells you how they pcik studnets if too many get the grades.

yes definitely. i know people who got in with much worse grades and they’ll look at your overall grades rather than one outlier.

Peter Symonds is not a selective college, you’ve nothing to worry about. The GCSE grades predictions look great anyway. I’m sure you’ll pull the French up in any case!

There will just be a minimum grade requirement to start the A-Levels you choose (as you’d expect). What are you going for?

By the way, it’s an amazing school. My daughter has just finished there. I think it was something like a 7 to start chemistry and biology for her, she swapped to essay subjects though.

You’ll have a great time there.

I'm definitely doing biology and chemistry, but I'm stuck between geography and environmental science for my 3rd A level.

Looking at their website, it appears I should meet the entry requirements so hopefully I get in!

How do they choose if too many get the grades?

You’d have to check the selection policy yourself there Muttley, but they are not selective.

Absolutely enormous college, over 4000 students. One of the best sixth forms in the country full stop, and almost certainly the best non selective.

They got 54 think successful Oxbridge applicants this year and normally manage about the same on medics of various flavours.

While they do have a sort of catchment it’s not at all strict and they offer boarding.

An outstanding place, best school that personally I’ve ever seen.

I can't really find much on their website to be honest, sorry 😕

Legally they MUST publish their Admission rules. Getting the grades doesn't secure a place.

I don't need to do that - I'm a teacher!

This is their admission policy:

It’s nice and clear, the admissions criteria are all in paragraph 2, you simply need to meet their conditional offer and a minimum standard on the GCSEs as stated. (Well below what you’re looking at).

Muttley was asking on the over subscription policy, that’s in paragraph 5. It’s geographical ‘as the crow flies’, however, admissions told me 2 years ago when my own daughter joined that unless you were really very very distant there shouldn’t be a problem. There are plenty of kids come up from example from Lymington (about an hour by train). So practically it doesn’t seem to be restricted.

Have a read of that 5 page PDF and get in touch with the admissions team, if you need to.

It really is a great school, very inclusive and really seems to give each student individually the very best. Enjoy it!

I live in Portsmouth so I am slightly worried that it is too far away and I might not get accepted as a result...
My son got accepted two years ago with similar grades. But he ended up going to UWC Atlantic in Wales as was a better option for him.

So I don’t think you should worry about. You’re a very good student, a college should be happy to have you.

The admission policy should be much more visible and you cannot be sure how far the distance criteria will be as it will vary from year to year.
